“Corregidor or Mariveles and Caballo are two islands dividing the entrance of Manila Bay into two channels, known respectively as the North and South channels. Corregidor, the principal island, 639 feet high, lies near the north shore and is 3 miles in length east and west. On its north side is a small bay, protected by breakwaters, affording good anchorage for coasting vessels and from Buri Point a reef extends to the southward toward Caballo Island”.

“There is fresh water to be procured under a steep cliff at the western end of this island, but the landing is on a stony beach, and inconvenient”.

“The province of Corregidor has a lighthouse and semaphore station. Its capital is San Jose with a population of 514. The ground, although high and broken, holds good vegetation and game is abundant. There is a small military and naval garrison.”

“The new Corregidor Island light is to be exhibited on and after August 1, 1897. It will be a flashing white and red light showing white and red flashes alternately every ten seconds. The light will be 633 feet above the sea, 42 feet above the ground and visible 36 miles in clear weather”.

The population of the Philippines was estimated to be 8 million. (over 92 million now)

The country consists of 2,000 islands. (today the popular number quoted is 7,107)

There are a lot of grammatical errors in the document which I expect occurred when the paper was scanned. Optical recognition software can be quite finicky especially if the original text is hard to read.

You might find this interesting.
