Nice one and its definitely a nice addition to your collection. A few may have been used by the Japanese paratrooper raids in Leyte during 1944.

Nice find! Would you know anything about its value? My father scored one with the bayonet. Thank you.

Current pricing on paratrooper rifles (matching numbers, mum intact, no rust or pitting, bore clean / no corrosion, 90% blue, unmolested wood) sell in the $2,000 - $3,000 range. Condition is everything.

A very nice example. I have seen many of these rifles over the past 30 years, and to my recollection, most all were be in basically unused condition. It would appear that very few were ever issued, and perhaps even fewer used in combat. So far, I have not been able to find out with certainty what rifles the Japanese Paratroopers had on Leyte. One would assume they had these breakdown rifles, but we do not know for sure, and I cant imagine they had the standard type 38, which was much too long. Perhaps they had the standard type 99 rifles as well, which could possibly be used for such a purpose.

Not the Type 38 rifle, but most likely the Type 38 carbine which used a 6.5 bullet. The rifle above uses the 7.7 bullet. They had a Type 100 which was short lived and replaced by the Type 2 above. Yes, most of these Type 2 specimens are pretty clean and minty. Leyte Japanese airborne operations started in 1944. The Type 2 began production in late 1943 and about 22000 were made...did it arrive in the field logistically soon there after....I do not know.

Manny, would love to see photos of your father "score". Does it have the cleaning rod still? They are hard...if not down right impossible to find if your missing one. It does not use the Type 99 cleaning rod, this rod is about an inch shorter.
Is the bayonet on the rifle about 15" long or is it much shorter? If it's a Special Paratrooper Bayonet, you have another winner too.
