Dewey Sailors Visit Historical Island
Story by Mass Communication Specialist 3rd Class (SW/AW) Joshua Keim
SOUTH CHINA SEA – Sailors from the Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer USS Dewey (DDG 105) departed Manila, Republic of the Philippines, Thursday, after making a scheduled four-day port visit to the capital city.
During the port visit, Sailors took a fairy to Corregidor Island; the largest of the islands that form the harbor defense of Manila Bay which were all fortified during the American occupation of the country.
Within the largest part of the island, called Topside, is a historic flagpole which stands today as a mute testimonial to the glory and passion of the fortress of Corregidor.
The flagpole was the mast of a Spanish warship, installed on the site by the American forces when they occupied Corregidor Island following the victory of the Asiatic Squadron, United States Navy, under Commodore George Dewey, over the Spanish fleet, under Admiral Patricio Montojo, in the Battle of Manila Bay on May 1, 1898.
While visiting the island, Cmdr. John Howard, commanding officer of USS Dewey, and Cmdr. Evan Russell, executive officer of USS Dewey, conducted a flag-raising ceremony at the Topside flagpole, honoring both the Filipino and American colors.

1st Flag 1945-02-16 by PIR 503d
Troopers of the 503d Parachute Infantry Regiment raised the US flag on a power pole 1945-02-16 on the first day of the assault. Over the years the pole has disappeared. Friends of Corregidor made an effort to find it and did. Between a gracious donor (Mr. Clark and Karen Judy}, the Kwiecinski family, Mr. Paul Whitman coordinating and the Corregidor Foundation INC. granting permission and doing all the work this new Memorial/Marker was established in 2015/16. The Corregidor Forum has a page for it:

It seems the Old Flagstaff on Topside, Corregidor, is not from a Spanish ship. It was challenged by a Corregidor Forum visitor, johnjohnso1957. We have collected historical images that seem to suggest that the Flag Pole on Corregidor was a standard US army design and was used on other Army forts in the early 1900s. In this album are many sample Army flagpoles from other US Army forts.

The web master of Coirregidor.org, many years ago, travelled to Corregidor to commemorate the liberation of Corregidor on the 16th of Feb. He invited and encouraged others to go along and so it has become an annual tradition to raise a 48 Star Flag on the Old Flagstaff on Corregidor. This 48 Star US Flag was donated to the Corregidor Foundation Incorporated (CFI) by the Gen. MacArthur Memorial in Norfolk. On the 16th of Feb. 1945 the Allied Forces, Navy, Paratrooper by air and Army Infantry by sea assaulted Corregidor, liberated it and presented it personally to Gen. MacArthur on the 2nd of March 1945, who excepted it and spoke his unforgettable words: “Let no enemy ever haul down these colors”. We like to express our deep appreciation and thanks to CFI for facilitating this commemoration. A special thanks to the Executive Director, LtCol. Art Matibag, his officer in charge on the Island, Mr. Ron Benadero and all the very helpful and friendly CFI staff and contractor personnel. It has been always a very pleasant experience to work together with the Philippine Corregidor Foundation Inc. (CFI) Organization.
