misstk,
I agree, Margaret (Peggy) was a remarkable woman; she was also very determined and stubborn it seems.
One of the things that initially caught my interest in her is that she hoodwinked the Japanese so easily (?) and thoroughly for most of the time. Granted, there was a fairly large group of people she had to call on for help at times. But still....maybe she luckily fell through the cracks.
Good luck with your endeavor. This site is a mine of information waiting to be found. There are so many topics to look through.

Thanks Bob, you are like a treasure hunter.

I've been trying to figure out the identity of the third woman, too!

No idea as to the third woman. This photo was likely taken on board the ship they were on returning to the U.S. Third woman was probably one of the women liberated from Santo Tomas or one of the other civilian camps but that is only conjecture.

If it was on board a ship to the states you might find a passenger manifest on ancestry.com.
I talked to a woman who left Manila right after it was liberated (May 45?) on the SS Monteray. She had quite a story about zig zagging because of subs, etc. She met her older brother who she hadn't seen since the beginning of the war, while going through immigration.

Yes, they were on the John Lykes together, but with lots of other women, so the ship's passenger roster wouldn't be helpful.

I know some Santo Tomas internees through BACEPOW. I'll pass the photo around and see if someone has an answer.

That's a good idea, thanks. My first book focused on the civilian internees, and the woman looks familiar but I wouldn't be able to attach a name to the face.

Patty, The third lady in the Utinsky Phillips photo is the wife of the Swedish Consul. Dorithy/Dorothy Janson. Not sure on the spelling of the first name.
