Last year when I first visited the Philippines, I packed in my luggage a walking stick with a rare earth magnet attached to the end of it for finding shrapnel when I visited Corregidor.
First chance I had after arriving there was after a short visit with Steve and Marcia Kweicinski. They had asked me to bring them some trail mix from the U.S. and I barely had time to visit with them prior to their leaving for Manila for Veterans Day. I unpacked my pole and magnet and went scrounging. I had the intention of working hard to amass a few pieces of shrapnel for the purpose of donating it to the Descendants Group of the American Defenders of Bataan and Corregidor for their Convention auction.
It took me exactly five minutes to figure out that I had no need of the magnet. Every step I took a piece was snapping against my magnet. It was then that I learned that by simply looking down and recognizing what I was looking for was all I needed.
Corregidor is a shrapnel hunters paradise. It is everywhere. A blind man could start a scrap iron business there. In a matter of minutes I had 15 pieces and hadn't moved more than a couple of hundred feet from the hotel. This year at the May Convention of the American Defenders of Bataan and Corregidor, my pieces of shrapnel were the hit of the auction I am told. Strange but True.

Hi Bob
Good post, thank you. I was planning on something like that for my next outing there. I will try it sans magnet for now.
Do you have any suggestions for areas that are more relic rich than others? Some friends of mine want to join me some day and would like for them to have a good chance of a memento of their trip.
