70TH ANNIVERSARY RETAKING CORREGIDOR FEB.16 – MARCH 02 1945 A Commemoration, the 70th Anniversary Retaking Corregidor Feb. 16 to March 2, 1945 was organized by the Corregidor Foundation Inc (CFI) and the Filipino-American Foundation Endowment (FAME). Again this year, Paul Whitman, I and friends visited Corregidor to raise the 48 Star US Flag to commemorate the 70th Anniversary of the Paratroopers doing it on the 16th Feb. 1945. Corregidor Foundation Inc. already planed a bigger commemoration, which we joined and they accommodated us in every way possible. An album of this event with 51 images has been established in my Photobucket image sharing account; it also includes other Corregidor images from that visit: tinyurl.com/opdwg26Here are 15 sample images but they are smaller than in the album: X85a. The new gasifier plant in the Eng. Ravine on Corregidor, I understand it was built by the Sun Cruise Corporation which runs the ferry to Corregidor and the hotel on the island. It was not in operation at that moment. X85b. A map of Corregidor Island with all the landmarks and subjects of this album marked on it. X86. On our first day on the Corregidor Island, I took my Family friend visitor from Germany to the 1000 Men Tunnel in the Grubbs Ravine. This is the water tank inside X87. Globe Communication built a new tower among the area of the 4 water tanks next to the Corregidor Lighthouse. The resident Kwiecinski family said their internet connection improved markedly. X88. Corregidor Foundation Inc. (CFI) is improving the visitor comfort facilities. Two new toilet facilities are being build topside on Corregidor Island near the Lighthouse. X89. Corregidor Foundation Inc. (CFI) is improving the visitor comfort facilities. This ramp type access to the Lighthouse area is also part of that effort. X90. Paul Whitman and a CFI Official are checking the hail yard. Commemoration to remember the Rock Force, the Paratrooper 503d unit raising the first US Flag on the 16th of Feb.1945, their Assault Day on Corregidor. X91. In this picture the Valor Tour to Historic Battlefields guest, retired Lt. Col. Thomas Morgan, West Point Class of 1958 helped getting the flag ready. X92. The US Flag is going up on the Old Spanish Flagpole. Our guest speaker today is Mr. Steve Kwiecinski, son of a survived Defender of Corregidor, who may have fired the last heavy gun on Corregidor at the Japanese invaders in 1942 at Battery Way. X97. Corregidor Foundation Inc (CFI) is always trying to attract more visitors to Corregidor Island to preserve our heritage, so we don’t forget our history. X98. My friends and I had a lucky star; the Valor Tour to Historic Battlefields guest, retired Lt. Col. Thomas Morgan, West Point Class of 1958 let us ride with him to Bataan where my friends and I had come from on this visit to Corregidor.

70TH ANNIVERSARY OF MAC’S RETURN 2nd MARCH 2015 All the material in this segment came from the Kwiecinski Family Blog who reside on Corregidor Island. The images were actually shot by the photographer Gilbert Secosana who also resides and works on Corregidor Island. Many VIPs came, wreaths were laid, speeches were given, the Philippine Military provided a band and the Maritime Academy provided cadets for the ceremony, it was a nice remembrance to that event 70 years ago. The story and event is presented in this Blog with 30 images: www.steveandmarciaontherock.blogspot.com/2015/03/70th-anniversary-of-macs-return.htmlHere are 4 sample images from that blog: X120.---Maritime Academy cadets enter the colors X121.---Lt. Gen'l Hernando Iriberri, Commanding General of the Philippine Army, Fort Bonifacio, and Major Gen'l Pasquerette, USARPAC, present the third wreath X122.---Ms. Malone, representing the US Embassy in Manila stands before the five wreaths during the final playing of Taps. X123.---Distance shot showing a part of the large gathering of guests Picture presented by Karl X124.---Last but not least, the old image, so that we don’t forget. I wonder whether the General ever expressed his feeling on that day ordering the flag raised.

Nice job Karl as usual.
The Gasifier Plant in Engineers Ravine is at the extreme southwestern portion of the Ravine. If you look closely you can see water from the small stream that ALWAYS runs through Engineers Ravine close to the southern cliff, ending in the sea near the Engineers dock or Coal basin. This water is from the formerly controlled spring and runoff from above in Middleside in the western edge in Engineers Ravine.
A part of the stream going down to the North Dock area is seen running against the wall to the right of the Gasifier Plant..... going by the new building and into the old concrete street built in pr-war times.
When there in February, 2015,it was evident that an extreme flood had come down through Engineers Ravine from above in Middleside, and did further damage to the former pr-war massive concrete construction,( put in the stream bed to control such floods coming into the highly developed ravine of pr war times). It was hard to find the actual spring this year due to damage.
At any rate another typhoon similar to the last could move the Gasifier Plant much closer to the Hotel.

PHILIPPINE MILITARY ACADEMY ON CORREGIDOR 2015-04-10 On my first day on Corregidor on this visit we had some surprise visitors. Between the 10th and 15th April 2015 I visited Corregidor Island, the former Fort Mills which was twice the scene of bitter battles during WWII. I was invited by the Coastal Defense Study Group (CDSG, cdsg.org/old/home.htm ) to join them during these dates. This is the album of the 1st day: tinyurl.com/ls57mvsHere are some sample pictures of that visit; in the album above the images are much larger. X254. BRP Bacolod City (LC-550). This Philippine ship landed today on Corregidor with most if not all Philippine Military Academy (PMA) Cadets. They stayed overnight. BRP Bacolod City (LC-550) is a modern landing craft and we did not have this type hull in the US Navy. But I saw a similar hull in Hawaii which was operated by the US Army. This ship has an URL in Wikipedia. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BRP_Bacolod_City_(LC-550)X255. BRP Bacolod City is moored bow to and the Mine Dock, North Shore, Bottomside, Corregidor Island on the 10th of April 2015. BRP from Wikipedia means this: Barko/Bapor ng Republika ng Pilipinas (ship/steamship of the Republic of the Philippines) or Philippine Navy ship name prefix. X256. Looking into the BRP Bacolod City and we see many busses. The busses did not land here. To me that mean this ship with the PMA Cadets on board have plans to visit other places where the busses will be needed. X257. The BRP Bacolod City (LC550) came with escort vessels for protection or training or both. The two escort vessels can be seen in the North Channel. X258. The Philippine Military Cadets did many different things on Corregidor during this stay of 2 days and 1 night. Here are cadets being guided around Corregidor with two vehicles. X259. On this Friday, the Corregidor was very busy; in this picture Mr. Ron Benadero is guiding some of the PMA Cadets himself. He has a portable loudspeaker to help him. X260. Mr. Ron Benadero is the resident manager on Corregidor of the Corregidor Foundation Inc. (CFI). It is rare that he has to help guiding. The Portable loudspeaker worked fine for him. X261. The two Philippine Navy escort and patrol vessels in the North Channel between Bataan and Corregidor. X262. The two Philippine Navy escort and patrol vessels in the North Channel between Bataan and Corregidor. X263. Another troop of PMA Cadets marching out for Physical Training (PT) on Corregidor, this was in the late afternoon. X264. The PMA Cadets are spreading out under the shade trees to do PT. X265. These two Gentlemen must be staff personnel in the PMA and are having a relaxing moment on Corregidor.

CORREGIDOR VISITOR INFORMATION IN THE ADMIN OFFICE 2015-04-10 When someone visits Corregidor one has to go to the Admin Office and pay the Corregidor entrance fee of 200 peso. This only applies to visitors that enter Corregidor on their own and not thru a Sun Cruises Packaged Tour. At the cashiers office is other information posted that might interest future Corregidor visitors. I uploaded 8 images with this CFI Visitor information at this album with this URL. These pictures are in front of the album, the first pictures: tinyurl.com/ls57mvsThe same pictures are presented here, some are larger though in the above album, plus 1 extra image: X266. This is the Corregidor Admin Building, when you are a Walk-In visitor you will be directed here to pay your entrance fee. The picture was shot in 2008 Jan. the 14th. The building is located near the north shore docks on Bottomside. X267. In the Corregidor Admin Office is also the cashier office and at its window is information for the visitor posted. X268. Here is a close up of major price schedule for most activities on Corregidor directly managed by the Corregidor Foundation Inc (CFI). X269. All these prices are for Walk-in-Visitors, meaning you came here with your own hired boat or a boat hired from CFI. If you come with a packaged tour from Sun Cruises then this does not apply to you. X270. This is for the large boat, 40 pax capacities. There is an entity on Corregidor that operates three boats. And I do not understand the relationship to CFI. So many things in the Philippines are not transparent to us foreigners. Notice the phone numbers, should you be interested! X271. This is the small boat of the three boats on Corregidor that pick up Walk-in visitors at Camaya Point, which is half way between Cabcaben and Mariveles. Today this boat was loaded to capacity; today on Corregidor was a busy day. X272. Perhaps we can call this a mission statement of the Corregidor Foundation Inc. (Inc.). It is also posted at the cashier Office in the Admin Building on Corregidor Island. X273. This is the bottom section of the previous image, zoomed in and gives the Calling-Card information of CFI. X274. This is the island tour available for Walk-In visitors. It shows you the places they guide you to. That means you have to hire a jeepney, driver for 800 peso and a guide (if desired) for 1000 peso and it is only 2 hours long.

BUSY FRIDAY, 2015-04-10 ON CORREGIDOR This day I was a Walk-In myself (Came by privately arranged boat) and noticed right away today was a busy day on Corregidor. I presume it is because it is the school summer break in the Philippines and it was a Friday. Don’t forget, right now is the hottest time of the year in these latitudes! My purpose here was to join the Coastal Defense Study Group (CDSG) and we had specific goals and started out right away to accomplish our goals. But it was noticeable and worth mentioning how busy Corregidor was today. I started an album about this day on Corregidor and I just added this segment of images and they are at the end of the album, I put a “Z” in front of the image titles. tinyurl.com/ls57mvsBut these 11 images are also in this segment in the forum but the size is very much smaller: X283. 2015 April 10, a busy day on Corregidor, this was a group of Philippine Marines from Ternate with about 4 or 5 Americans in civvies and they were not talkative with me. X284. A Corregidor based boat; the smaller one of three boats here on Corregidor, brought a full load of Walk-ins (visitors) from Camaya Point. X285. The full load of passengers from the last image is being transported over to the south side on Bottomside Corregidor; they will camp there over night. X286. The smaller Corregidor based boat of three boats here on Corregidor is going to Bataan again, presumably to pick up more passengers. X287. Another group of Walk-Ins is touring Corregidor with a Corregidor Foundation Inc. (CFI) jeepney. This group or another was using the dormitory in Mc Arthur (new name) Café over night. X288. Other, smaller groups who were staying overnight and were enjoying the sites of Corregidor, like this couple. Notice the warship in the North Channel. X289. This group was from the people who were camping out on the south side of Corregidor Bottomside. This is the trolley bridge and the chapel can be seen in back. X290. The group camping out at the south side of Bottomside, Corregidor. 2015 April 10, a busy day on Corregidor. Notice a Coast Guard ship is in. X291. The group camping out at the south side of Bottomside, Corregidor. I think, they a roughing it. 2015 April 10, a busy day on Corregidor. Notice a Coast Guard ship is in. X293. 2015 April 10, a busy day on Corregidor; Sun Cruises used at least 5 trolleys. X294. Last but not least, the Philippine Navy was here and it brought most if not all Cadets from the Philippine Military Academy (PMA). 2015 April 10, a busy day on Corregidor.

Freedom Café is the new name for the former MacArthur Café. V361. The former MacArthur Café was closed for many months this year. I do not know why! On the 7th Nov 2016 some Marine friends invited me to show them Corregidor. THE MACARTHUR CAFÉ IS OPEN AGAIN WITH A NEW NAME: FREEDOM CAFÉ. We had signed up for the full day tour package and that did not allow us any other time to look at anything else. I heard it was open and I rushed over there just before our departure and seen guests at the table drinking a Red Horse beer. Plus I saw an old Corregidor employee sitting there who was associated with the Café. The manager Edith, who we all admire, like and respect very much, was not there. Since then, I have called and learned that Edith does spend some management time on the Rock, at the café but she was absent on this day. V362. This is the new name but they offer the same service as in the past under the old name MacArthur Café. THE CORREGIDOR INN IS CLOSED FOR RENOVATION UNTILL JAN 2017 OR LATER, so you could rent a room at this new business Freedom Cafe Or you could rent a room with a fan from the Corregidor Foundation Inc (CFI) for 700 pesos, in the Rowhouse at the Stockade level.
