SUN Cruises Inc. (SCI), the sole ferry shuttle provider and major tour operator on Corregidor Island, is set to pioneer a significant green project that will convert waste into energy and run a generator that will produce electrical power.
SCI has signed the agreement with 18H Inc., calling for the latter’s expertise in the installation of a 58-kilowatt biomass gasifier power generator (GPG).
Biomass gasification system is an electricity-generation technology that converts any type of biomass energy, such as waste from agriculture and forests, and organic waste, into combustible gas that is fed to a generator for producing electricity.
At present, successful technologies involving biomass gasification for the generation of electricity using generators or engines are already becoming widely accepted because of their reliability, simplified operations and maintenance, space-saving technology, environment-friendly clean-gas product and clean combustion, and significantly low demand for gas quality.
Biomass-energy sources are waste from wood, paper, coconut husks and shells, as well as rice husks.
“This green-project initiative will pave the way for a cleaner environment on Corregidor Island resulting from a pioneering technology that is totally environment-friendly,” SCI President Roberto A. Umali said.
“We are excited to see that SCI’s initiatives in helping us create a green and clean environment on Corregidor Island will already bear fruit,” Lt. Col. Artemio Matibag, Corregidor Foundation Inc. executive director, added.
The biomass GPG is one of the many green initiatives of SCI and perhaps the first kind of project in the Philippines. It is expected to be up and running by the first quarter of 2013.
Sun Cruises, a member of the Magsaysay Transport and Logistics Group, offers guided historical tours, adventure tours, walking tours, camping, corporate teambuilding, hiking and biking trails, and overnight stays at Corregidor Inn.
Sun Cruises also offers daily cruises along Manila Bay with three sailings daily, onboard MV Spirit of Manila, docked at the Sun Cruises ferry terminal at the back of the Folk Arts Theater inside the Cultural Center of the Philippines Complex.
