Hello Everyone, I am the great-grandson of Floyd Allen Mitchell. This memorial and anecdotes from my grandmother are the only information I have on this great man. Does anyone else have info/connection regarding my great-grandfather?

Hello Jim and welcome to the forum, Your great-grandfather perished on the hellship Oryoku Maru which sank in Subic Bay after being attacked by aircraft from the USS Hornet (CV-12). His name appears on this POW roster (it takes a moment to download): www.west-point.org/family/japanese-pow/EricksonCSV.htmIf you google the Oryoku Maru you'll find many websites with more information. Here's a link from this website with some interesting posts (scroll halfway down for starts. It's on pages 3, 4, 5, and 6): corregidor.proboards.com/thread/987/fort-wint-subic-bay?page=3Dmether recently posted photos of the Oryoku Mary being attacked on this site: corregidor.proboards.com/thread/1601/oryoku-maru I'm sure there is much more to be learned about your great-grandfather and perhaps someone here can share more information. Regards, Chad P.S.-Here's one of the photos dmether posted which shows POWs swimming from the Oryoku Maru to the shore, and the tennis court they were kept in for six days.

Jim Fitz, if you should read this, find me on Facebook. My grandfather LTC Clair M. Conzelman was best friends with your gt-grandfather on Corregidor and throughout their imprisonment. My grandfather survived the Oryoku Maru, was devastated by the loss of your gt-grandfather, and died on the Enoura Maru.
