Hello Friends
On the 6th of April 2008 a new plaque, honoring a Naval Officer who perished on the Hellship Oryoku Maru, right here in Subic Bay 1944, was dedicated to him by his family.
The participants are from left to right:
-Bob Chester, a Subic Resident, retired US Navy Vet who designed the memorial;
-Randy Anderson, a retired US Naval Officer, founded and heads the Hellships Memorial project. The idea came to him when he was a staff officer here and when the wife of a perished POW on the Oryoku Maru came to visit Subic Bay many years ago;
-Bill Hamby, overseen the construction of the memorial, he is also a long time resident here. We served together ones, at a command here;
-Spike Nasmyth, a resident here, USAF Vet and once a guest of the Hanoi Hilton. You can find out more about him on the web, just search for ‘Spike’;
-Minter Dial, the grandson of the officer honored here today, he was named after his grandfather who perished here. He also has a web page for his grandfather:
www.west-point.org/family/japanese-pow/
-Victor Dial, father of the grandson above and son of the perished officer. He, I believe was also a US Naval Officer;
-Edna Binkowski, she is a widower and is prominent historian of WWII in the Philippines and specializes in the Bataan Battlefield. She is an author of at least 2 books on the subject. You can find out more about her googling her name;
-Karl-Wilhelm Welteke, me - just a retired sailor in the PI - Philippines;
-Brian Homan, also a long time resident here, he is from Australia and is the owner of the famous ‘Vasco’s Bar and Restaurants’. He has a museum there with many pre-colonial artifacts recovered underwater from the Philippine Islands, a must see!
-Harriet Troy, Australian and wife of Clive;
-Clive Troy, member of the Australian RSL-Return Services League – promoting Australian support for the Hellships Memorial;
-Kahna Versoza, a Philippine entrepreneur on the SBFZ – Subic Bay Freeport Zone. She is the owner of the Subic Park Hotel; the Dial father and son stayed there, I believe;
-Cheryl Singzon, is the Marketing and Promotions Manager of the large Legenda Hotel in SBFZ;
-Kevin Hamdorf, not on the picture but who shot this photo with my camera is an Australian photographer here in the SBFZ. He also has a very long involvement making the memorial become a reality. Google his name and you find out more about him.
