As I mentioned in an earlier post, I am researching an article on Gen. Edward P. King, who surrendered the Bataan garrison on April 9, 1942. He was a remarkable man. In reading various articles, I have come across something Gen. King supposedly said to his staff after he had decided to surrender, “We were asked to lay down a bunt. We did just that. You have nothing to be ashamed of.”
I'd love to be able to use that quote but I cannot find any first-hand source for that quote. I am looking for whatever book, manuscript or diary it came from. I would love to use it because it does seem to sum up the Bataan campaign.
If anyone has a source for that quote, I would greatly appreciate it if you could let me know. The type of source I am looking for is a book, diary or manuscript by someone who was there with Gen. King.
I find it so ironic that Gen. King surrendered on the 77th anniversary of Gen. Lee's surrender at Appomattox. As a child in Georgia in the late 19th century, King had undoubtedly learned all about that surrender.
Thank you for your help.
