FORT MILLS POWER PLANT EARLY VIEW AND OUTSIDE VIEWS In April 2015 Glen Williford (CDSG) and I had a close look at the Fort Mills coal fired power plant which is also the cold storage and ice plant. I been there a number of times before but this visit motivated me to share some of my pictures in an organized way. It will take a long time to upload all and write descriptions. An album of the Fort Mills Power and Cold Storage Plant has been started in my photo sharing account. This first segment of images is called the letter “B” series and the images are larger in size than in this forum. This is the URL: s74.photobucket.com/user/PI-Sailor/library/Corregidor%20by%20subject/Ravines/Power%20Plant%20Ft%20Mills%20Ice%20Plant?sort=9&page=1or tinyurl.com/ncw9xtoThis B series of images is meant to give you an idea where it is, how it looked outside in the past and how it looks now. Some of the pictures came from other sources and I will try to credit those properly. Here are 10 sample images and they are smaller than in the album above: X708 (B1) this is rare picture of the Ft. Mills Power Plant. It came from our friend fots2 and is on page 2 in our forum and in this URL: corregidor.proboards.com/thread/651/photos?page=2X709 (B2) is from our friend fots2 and is on page 2 in our forum and in this URL: corregidor.proboards.com/thread/651/photos?page=2.He is demonstrating Then n. Now images. Fots2 also said this: Notice how high that the road is today. The first or bottom floor windows are almost out of sight. Previously to seeing the comparison photos, I had assumed the first floor windows was actually a basement level. X710 (B3) power plant, Ft. Mills, 1915 Feb from fots2 pg. 8 Then n. Now thread in our forum. This is the URL: corregidor.proboards.com/thread/651/photos?page=8X711 (B5) a similar picture as B4, it was shot Dec. 2007; it is from fots2 pg 6 Then n. Now thread in our forum. This is the URL: corregidor.proboards.com/thread/651/photos?page=6X712 (B7) in this 1921 map the Power and Cold Storage Plant is listed as No. 133 structure and it is obviously in the Engineering Ravine. X713 (B8) this is a most rare drawing of the Fort Mills Power and Cold Storage Plant. It was provided by Glen Williford, a leader of the Coastal Defense Study Group (CDSG). I will often refer back to it. X713a I uploaded the drawing at the size I received it in, 858KB. You should be able to zoom in on the picture above or this thumbtack image. X714 (B9) another rare picture of Bottomside, provided by the MacArthur Memorial in Norfolk. It is located here at high resolution: corregidor.org/bbbin/images/Norman_Collection_MacArthur_Memorial.jpgX715 (B11) in this 2008 image the scrub has been cleared on top of the Fort Mills Power and Cold Storage Plant but only in the front. X716 (B14) looking at the Fort Mills Power and Cold Storage Plant from the other end; this is a Feb 2009 image. Some of the grass on top, in front has grown back. X717 (B17) this shot of the east end of the Fort Mills Power and Cold Storage Plant shot Aug. This shot is only 6 month later of the same area (B16 image) but we can see much of the grass has come back.

Great stuff, as usual, Karl. I suppose the post-war cleaning up of Bottomside resulted in rubble being bulldozed in front of the building and thus making the ground level higher.

Thanks Karl for the tour.
Do they still have the larger artifacts found on Corregidor stored in the old Power Plant?
Fots and I had found and turned over to C.F.I. several artifacts we found a few years ago from Battery Denver. It appears someone had brought a metal detector onto Corregidor and they had dug up Battery Denver pretty good, 3 years ago?
There were broken parts of big guns etc, not sure what they were. They were probably to big and heavy to get off the island..........
They were probably buried in 1942? as guns were destroyed before surrender, or were these guns already in the hands of the Japanese as Denver was evacuated so quickly?
The same day John and I reported the items to C.F.I. they were taken from Battery Denver and laid out behind the office building for C.F.I on Bottomside.
Off this subject........
I was in a former Armory built on a lake in Seattle where the Navy and Marines trained for war. It was built in 1942, there was a live firing range on the top floor. The building is now a museum, a few of the bullet proof steel shutters were left uncovered so we could see them, although nothing was mentioned about them until you asked someone.
Half the building sits on wood pylons driven into the mud still. They then poured concrete over them. To finish of the first floor, the ends of 2 by 4's were used for the entire floor. When you walk on the floor all you see are the upright ends of 2 by 4's, these were used as there were lots of cut up 2 by 4's to be had. Each one is 3 inches deep.

TURBINE ROOM (ABOVE AND FRONT ROOM) This is now the Corregidor Foundation Inc. (CFI) power plant room. Fort Mills Power and Cold Storage Plant. An album of the Fort Mills Power and Cold Storage Plant has been started in my photo sharing account. This third segment of images is called the letter “E” series and the images are larger in size than in this forum. This is the URL: s74.photobucket.com/user/PI-Sailor/library/Corregidor%20by%20subject/Ravines/Power%20Plant%20Ft%20Mills%20Ice%20Plant?sort=9&page=1or tinyurl.com/ncw9xtoThis E series of images (10 images) show you the Turbine Room, the above level and the front room of the Fort Mills Power Plant on Corregidor Island. The pictures are spread from the 2nd to 3rd page of the album. Here are the same 10 pictures from the album but are much smaller: X753 (E1) the present ramp up to the Fort Mills Power Plant Turbine Room on Corregidor Island, the above level and the front room. This is 2008-08-20 image. X754 (E2) this is also a 2008-08-20 image and gives the relationship of the Fort Mills Power Plant Turbine Room on Corregidor Island to the stack. The ramp leads to the above level and the front room of the Turbine Room. X755 (E3) this picture is really unique and shows the front of the Fort Mills Power Plant Turbine Room on Corregidor Island. It came from this forum and fots2 and may have been shot about 1915. X756 (E4) this in size reduced drawing is for this and the next two segments, all dealing with the Fort Mills Power Plant Turbine Room on Corregidor Island. This drawing came from the CDSG. The thumbnail below is for the original size. X713a I uploaded the drawing at the size I received it in, 858KB. You should be able to zoom in with this thumbtack image. X757 (E5) the above Turbine Room of the Fort Mills Power Plant on Corregidor Island has two columns of concrete post which divides the space in 3 sections. This is the front room center section and you can see the door to the back room. X758 (E6) this is the left or west section of the Fort Mills above Power Plant Turbine Room (Front Room) on Corregidor Island. It is now used by the Corregidor Foundation Inc (CFI) as the diesel power plant, providing power to the CFI facilities. X759 (E7) this is the right or east section of the Fort Mills above Power Plant Turbine Room (Front Room) on Corregidor Island. It is now used by the Corregidor Foundation Inc (CFI) as the diesel power plant, providing power to the CFI facilities. X760 (E8) thru that door was the way to the Boiler Room; it had a metal platform and steel steps. We are in the Fort Mills Power Plant Turbine Room on Corregidor Island. X761 E9 this a 2008-11-08 image and Paul Whitman, the Corregidor.org web master has a look at the door to the Above Back Turbine Room, Fort Mills Power Plant on Corregidor Island. X762 E10 at many places on the deck of the Turbine Room, Fort Mills Power Plant on Corregidor Island are openings that severed the machinery set-up; so one got to be careful. This is a 2008-11-08 image.

TURBINE ROOM BASEMENT It is under the Turbine Room, front room and back room which are used now by the Corregidor Foundation Inc. (CFI) as the diesel power plant. Fort Mills Power and Cold Storage Plant. An album of the Fort Mills Power and Cold Storage Plant has been started in my photo sharing account. This third segment of images is called the letter “D” series and the images are larger in size than in this forum. This is the URL: s74.photobucket.com/user/PI-Sailor/library/Corregidor%20by%20subject/Ravines/Power%20Plant%20Ft%20Mills%20Ice%20Plant?sort=9&page=1or tinyurl.com/ncw9xtoThis D series of images (6 images) show you the basement under the Turbine Room, Fort Mills Power Plant on Corregidor Island. The pictures are on page 3 of the album. The turbine and generators must have been massive; the deck over the basement is supported by very heavy concrete supports. I never saw images of any machinery in the Boiler Room, Turbine Room or Compressor Room. Also many pipes, hoses and cables must have been running here, they are all gone but a few brackets are left. Here are the same 6 pictures from the album but are much smaller: But first the power plant drawing! X713a I uploaded the drawing at the size I received it in, 858KB. You should be able to zoom in with this thumbtack image. X819 (D1) this is 2008-09-22 shot of the basement under the Turbine Room of the Fort Mills Power Plant Turbine Room on Corregidor Island. Notice the two brackets from the overhead; in the next picture they are gone. X820 CD2) in this 2015 shot those two brackets are gone. Left is the front wall, straight ahead is the wall to the Compressor Room, west. This is the basement under the Turbine Room of the Fort Mills Power Plant Turbine Room on Corregidor Island. X821 (D3) this one of four shots, left to right, looking at the rear of the basement under the Turbine Room of the Fort Mills Power Plant on Corregidor Island. This is the left, the west side. X822 (D4) this is No2 of four shots, left to right, looking at the rear of the basement under the Turbine Room of the Fort Mills Power Plant on Corregidor Island. This is still part of the left half, the west side of the basement. X823 (D5) this is No3 of four shots, left to right, looking at the rear of the basement under the Turbine Room of the Fort Mills Power Plant on Corregidor Island. This is now part of the right half, the east side of the basement. X824 D6 this No4 of four shots, left to right, looking at the rear of the basement under the Turbine Room of the Fort Mills Power Plant on Corregidor Island. This is the right side, the east wall to the Boiler Room.

NEW DRAWINGS FROM ARMYJUNK, COASTAL DEFENSE STUDY GROUP (CDSG) Armyjunk is my long time friend Roger Davis; just yesterday he sent me these new drawings about the Fort Mills Power and Cold Storage Plant. Look at them with caution; they were generated for the purpose to gas proof the plant which was never carried out. At the courtesy of armyjunk and the CDSG they are uploaded to my album of the Fort Mills Power and Cold Storage Plant on Corregidor Island at a fair resolution of about 800KB: s74.photobucket.com/user/PI-Sailor/library/Corregidor%20by%20subject/Ravines/Power%20Plant%20Ft%20Mills%20Ice%20Plant?sort=9&page=1or tinyurl.com/ncw9xtoX825 (B8a) is another rare drawing of the Fort Mills Power and Cold Storage Plant, 2nd Floor or the upper floor; it was generated to gas proof the plant. It was provided by Roger Davis, a long time friend from the Coastal Defense Study Group (CDSG). You should be able to zoom in on this image; it uploaded at about 800KB. X826 (B8b) is another rare drawing of the Fort Mills Power and Cold Storage Plant, Ground Floor or the 1st Floor; it was generated to gas proof the plant. It was provided by Roger Davis, a long time friend from the Coastal Defense Study Group (CDSG). You should be able to zoom in on this image; it uploaded at about 800KB. X827 (D0a) this is a cropped drawing showing the basement under the Turbine and Pump Rooms. It is modified for the project of gas proofing which did not happen. It was provided by Roger Davis, a long time friend from the Coastal Defense Study Group (CDSG).
