Matthew Westfall’s Book:
This is the write-up from the above book URL:
The Devil's Causeway: The True Story of America's First Prisoners of War in the Philippines, and the Heroic Expedition Sent to Their Rescue.
You can get the book also from other places; I got mine from a local Philippine source: Gallery of Prints.
W754 this is the author Mathew Westfall, he seems to be a very interesting man. I just bought the book and I am really, really impressed about the amount of research went into this book. This is his Facebook page and many of the pictures in the book above are also in this Facebook page and are much larger.
www.facebook.com/matthewswestfall/I asked him whether I could use some of his pictures and quotes from the book and he answered this:

Here is an outstanding sample from the book and his Facebook page:
W755 Captain Teodorico Novicio - The Rebel Leader at Baler
The description for the insurgent captain in the above image.
A key character in The Devil’s Causeway is Captain Teodorico Novicio, the relentless insurgent leader who battled both the Spaniards and then the Americans at Baler. After some interesting twists and turns following the arrival of the American forces at Baler in February, 1900, the rebel officer was eventually arrested, tried and convicted for his crimes. Here’s an incredible photograph of Novicio at his sentencing by the US Army in front of the Baler church in early January, 1901. All of the town’s residents attended the event, some under umbrellas, and can be seen in the distance.
This is Mathews Westfall’s Facebook URL for his album about Captain Teodorico Novicio. The picture above is from his collection of startling images and documents on Novicio that he dug up at the US National Archives while undertaking research for The Devil's Causeway book:

www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.433069620075331.97046.384648011584159&type=3Captain Teodorico Novicio, at his court marshal in Baler, was held responsible for
USS YORKTOWN SAILOR ORA B. McDONALD BURIED ALIVE AFTER THE AMBUSH IN 1899. USS YORKTOWN SEAMAN GEORGE ARTHUR VENVILLE WAS LED TO HIS DEATH IN 1899.
Found guilty, Novicio faced a life sentence of hard labor in Bilibid Prison. A few years later, transferred to a prison island in Laguna Del Bay, he was shot during a prison escape. All this interesting information you can read in the book and Facebook page of Mathews Westfall about this Navy debacle in Baler, which is not much written about.
