Dateline; August 17, 2017
Camden Waterfront, South Jersey Port, Camden New Jersey
Final docking place for the battleship USS New Jersey BB 62
I have longed to see this ship for more years than I care to remember, but now live close enough that it was just a 2.5 hour car ride away.
This is the first thing you see when walking towards the pier. Heart rate, pulse, respiration all on the rise.
Walking up to the ship they have marble pillars denoting all of her campaigns. The picture of the one for Beirut was for me, though I had rotated out of Lebanon long before she got there. The Luzon one is for my wife for she is from central Luzon. The one for Iwo Jima was for my step dad who was a purple heart veteran of that island battle. Unfortunately he never got to see the picture for he passed away the day after I got home. A true hero, at least to me.
Fitting and proper that this should be here. They will never be forgotten.
Ward Room
CIC, later changed to CEC
Adm. Halsey's Stateroom directly behind the bridge.
The Benjamin Franklin Bridge leading to center city Philadelphia.
CIWS (Close In Weapons System, pronounced seawiz) there are four of them on the ship
The CIWS and the Harpoons and the Tomahawks were all added after WWII of course.
The first thing I thought of when seeing this was you, Karl. A nod to the Navy diver, this Bud is for you, Karl
the beating heart of any ship at sea, Mess Deck
Turret #3
You are allowed to go inside turret 3. This space is so cramped it has to be seen to appreciate. Here you see 3 powder bags about to be rammed home.
The top of gun 3, turret 3.
5" and CIWS
From shore, a beautiful sight......unless you are in its cross hairs.
Here you can see them all. the 16" and 5" and CIWS are easy to see but you have to look close for the others. The Harpoons are the red dots below the E on the aft smoke stack and the Tomahawks are amidships just aft of the forward stack.
What a day this was!
