Wanted to extend an invitation to those of you who may not be aware of my ongoing efforts to chronicle and commemorate the events and people associated with the upcoming 75th anniversary of the April 4, 1943 POW escape from the Davao Penal Colony on the "official" Escape From Davao Facebook page.
I assembled a ton of materials while conducting research for the book and my documentary film based on the book, 4-4-43, but a significant amount of this extraordinary material - photos, letters, telegrams, diary entries, newsreel film clips, radio broadcasts, newspaper articles, official reports and documents - went unused in both projects. So I decided early last year to let these materials see the light of day in an on-going series of (semi) regular postings on the Facebook page.
I began in Fall 2016 in an effort to follow in the footsteps of the story's characters as they set out on the road to war in the build-up to December 1941, monitored the daily progress of the fighting and life on Bataan and Corregidor through this past spring, and am now trying to provide a glimpse into their individual and collective struggles to survive as prisoners of war 75 years ago right now in the fall of 1942. I plan to update the page on a regular basis through the 75th anniversary of the famed escape next April 4, 2018, and will continue at least through the subsequent anniversary of the release of the escape/atrocities story by the U.S. Government in early 1944 (January/February 2019).
I also use the space to contribute updates on other happenings and items related to the story and those who participated in it, such as a recent posting on the 90th anniversary of the visit of Charles Lindbergh to Abilene, Texas on September 28, 1927. Lt. Col. William Edwin Dyess, then a wide-eyed 11-year-old kid from nearby Albany, was present that day hoping to catch a glimpse of the "Lone Eagle," his childhood hero and the man largely responsible for Dyess' fascination with flight and decision to enter the Army Air Corps.
The next scheduled update is Oct. 9. Those of you on Facebook are welcome to start following along!
