My grandfather was a corpsman in the South Pacific, he wouldn't talk about it really, and now he is dead. However, he used to cry during an old black and white movie about the evacuation of Corregidor. The medical personnel are using every small craft to evacuate wounded and in one of the last scenes a nurse jumps out of truck, sacrificing herself to the Japanese. Do you know the name of this movie?
Do you know of a book recalling the memories of medical personnel? I would appreciate it. My grandfather is Maurice Van Susteren, he is mentioned in an old book called "We Are the Wounded", where does one find more info?
Thank you.

Maura, Are you in the US? This might be a good starting point............... www.worldcatlibraries.org/ just type in Corregidor or Bataan and it will tell you where the nearest book is located. Most can be had on a interlibrary loan and all of these sell cheap and can be found at www.alibris.com/search/search.cfm Corregidor James H. Belote, William M. Belote Escape from Corregidor Edgar D. Whitcomb Corregidor: The End of the Line Eric Morris We Band of Angels: The Untold Story of American Nurses Trapped on Bataan by the Japanese Elizabeth M. Norman I hope this helps some, it just a starting point

the movie that your grandfather remembers is probably "so proudly we hail", with paulette goddard, claudette colbert, and others. came out in about 1943. some of the nurses who were actually on bataan and corregidor, who viewed it after the war, thought it was a "crock" according to some of them quoted in the book "band of angels". i remember the movie very well and it appears on the late night shows on tv quite often.

This is a book that I've not yet heard of, but sounds interesting. Was the author in the Philippines during WWII? I am finding that there are many books that were published right after the war that are packed full of good information. Alot of the recollections in these older books are very fresh, the events having transpired just in the past several years at the time. It can be hard to find them because they are all out of print, but the website that you provided, Bob, is a good one. Thanks for the tip.

Here is a photo of Navy nurses shortly after they were freed from Los Banos internment camp. I have no idea where the photo was taken. Attachments:

Elizabeth Norman's book, We Band of Angels, is an excellent source on the American nurses in the Philippines.

LIST OF FILIPINO NURSES ON BATAAN AS OF JULY 1, 1942 About 3 month after the fall of Bataan Bob Hudson has a treasure chest of many WWII personnel lists and he is always graceful to share them. He gave me permission and maybe after I post this he can enlighten us as to where these nurses served and where the list came from. W361 he published the list on the Bataan WWII Museum Facebook page and I captured this with a screen shot.
