hey battery...i am making a highly uneducated guess, but if i am not mistaken the jacket worn by the GI with the cloth fatigue cap is a type worn by airborne troops. i betcha this shot was taken at one of those Japanese airstrips on new guinea that macarthur grabbed by using airborne forces as he advanced up the north coast of that huge island. on july 3-4, 1943 the 503 PIR airdropped on noemfoor. these two GIs might be looking at the fruits of their labors. this "helen" might have been knocked out on the ground by previous bombings or maybe it was caught in the ground fighting if their was any. as i said, just an uneducated guess.

Interesting photo.
I'd say the plane was shot down or crashed on landing or takeoff.
There is a good sized tree standing inside the fuselage on the left, (could be what sheered off the nose), and the propellers are bent on the right

Hey Okla, I think you are right about Noemfoor. The Japanese had two airfields in the area (Kamiri and Kornasoren) and when I checked on my files, there were a few Ki-49s Helens destroyed at Kamiri.
Phantom, I also wondered about that tree in right side of the front fuselage. Good observation.

They are from a series taken early in the war. The specific photos are at: corregidor.org/archive/pir/pir_00.htmRefer then to Index Page #8. I am seeking captions for each photograph, here's your chance!
