Anyone know what this aircraft is? Taken in Fort Benning in 1940 I think. That's my father in law who was a member of the 501st Parachute Battalion which later became the 503rd.

The unusual plane looks like a Kennett Gyroplane. I am not an expert on these, but I have read a little bit about them. They were used for a relatively short period, until the development of the helicopter during WWII. The difference was that gyrocopter (or gyroplane) had an unpowered rotor, and needed a takoff roll to get the rotor up to speed. Here is a picture.

The aircraft behind the picture of the YG-1 gyroplane looks like a P-35 Seversky
