EXO asked me to post this 1945 photo of General MacArthur returning to Corregidor. His comments were: “Look at halo effect on all the figures - as if it was photo retouched. What you other guys think?” My reply was: “That is a strange effect. I copied and enlarged the photo. The shadows look correct so my guess is that this is an original photo. It appears that the transition from dark to lighter areas have this halo. You can't see it in dark to white areas but I expect the halo is still there. My guess is that the effects we see in this photo are the result of a very poor quality (degraded) negative. But who knows???

Mac Arthur's shadow doesn't line up with the rest in line behind him............
The concrete post in front of him is not captured with the same effect as the people in line.
Where on Corregidor was this taken?
Looks like a water tank on the top right.

Hey Guys....I don't pretend to know a thing about photography, but isn't this "effect" due to the photo being retouched to bring out the individual figures. The original pic was probably fuzzy due to a degraded negative or whatever, as Fots stated. Look at Genl MacArthur's foot that is raised off the ground. It has been enhanced by outlining his shoe. Methinks, the same thing was done to the other figures, especially the ones following behind in the murkier portion of the photograph. Also, notice Genl Mac's face outline. Just my hunch. I, at one time, had an ancient photograph of my great grandfather in his Yankee soldier suit and the photographer did the same thing to bring out his hand and fingers on the pistol he was brandishing for the camera. The latter photo studio/lab was attempting to reproduce copies for a family reunion. He was posing, as was customarily done in those days, as if he was some great commander. In reality he was a lowly "buck" sergeant. Just my two cents. Is that "topside" in the rear? Malinta had a more rounded summit it seems to me, but having never been there (I depend almost exclusivily on Fots' Fantastic Fotos) I am probably in error. If that is a water tower(it certainly appears to be) in the upper right portion of the pic, is this photo of the area south of the water tank ridge where so much Infantry combat took place in1942. Again, just my two cents worth of conjecture.

I agree with okla that there has been an attempt to retouch the photo. I think they were also trying to colorize this.

I think okls is 100% correct. It is a retouch job.
I heard later that this was a common practice to enhance the subjects when printed in newspapers of the day.
The foot is a give away.

here is a photo that has been retouched, a not uncommon practice.. the original has a very thin white line around the gun tube. maybe this is what was done with the other pic

Good example of the craft of retouching, that.
I see there's another example within the picture - artwork with the white pencil/brush to give the ammunition cases definition against the shadows.
No wonder MacArthur doesn't look at all like MacArthur in that photo. Every age line and feature on his face has been retouched. No wonder he manages to look so youthful.
Having a look at it again, could it be that he is walking down that short road towards his former house/qtrs, and that the photo is taken facing west, with Malinta Hill in the background?

That could be correct EXO.
The water tower, if it's a water tower in the background, was it by Battery Denver? Or closer to Malinta Tunnel?
I have a Johnny Walker bottle from near his house on that Point. Found under the stairs to his house in front of the concrete bunker.
If that was his house.............
No Scotch left just a cork in the bottle bottom.......damn.....

Yeah, but doesn't that mean we found his "true" house east of malinta based on historic hearsay?
jingle bells, really?
