Well, it's getting towards 16 February and we're getting ready to raise the flag on Corregidor again. Fots and Phantom are there already and Trailmaster and I will be there on the 15th. We'd all hoped that one of the 503d veterans would be with us this time, but the powers that be have gone so far as to deny him a passport - that is, until he produces further information as to his citizenship. Bet he didn't have those problems volunteering for the paratroops in 1942. Don't you just love bureaucrats - I sure do. We've all seen the standard press photo of the flag raising ceremony on Corregidor - you know the one that a certain someone must have decided should be the single most published Corregidor photo in just about every newspaper coast to coast and in the foreign press. I thought I'd share with you a photo from my digital collection that isn't it. Not everyone was invited. Lt. Bill Calhoun took the photo. Sort of makes you think that some press director decided that "well we've got enough people in frame, and we only have enough fresh uniforms for these men, the rest can read about it in their hometown papers for the rest of their lives..." Nah, of course not! Interesting that the 'Corregidor Air Force' is lined up on Topside. Must have been exciting flying into "Topside Field." It would have beaten riding the Thunderbolt on Coney Island, for sure!

A photo from my collection.
One of these troopers could be Lawrence R. Hancock (503d HQ & HQ Co.).
His obituary says "He was a World War II veteran in the Pacific and honored with raising the victory flag on Corrigador when General MacArthur made his promised return to the Philippines"
