Thanks Fots. That tunnel complex looks similar to the one at Batan Island. I'll go upload the pix of that complex ASAP now that the external hard drive is hooked up to the 'puter. Will be making a thread of it at Trip Reports.

WRT the "Wall of Caves," are these the tunnels built by the Japanese as defenses against the Americans? Or are these the Shinyo tunnels that can be seen from the sea? I can't recall.... Thanks.

I'm currently planning a trek set for 18-20 March 2011. Destinations: Tarak Ridge, Mt Mariveles, and Fort Mills. The objective at Tarak is to find Kurosawa's Nate and perhaps Stone's P-40 that crashed there. I've been to the pacificwrecks site and also seen that page of Kevin Hamdorf on the Nate and will use that as a springboard. I hope to catch a glimpse of the Nate's wreckage, and maybe add more info for the search of Stone's P-40. That Tarak trek is set on 18-19 March. The plan is to start trekking at 0400, so that the group can hit the ridge and set up camp by 1200. Search for the Nate and P-40 starts after lunch. Descent starts on 19 March at 0400hrs. From Tarak, the group goes to Fort Mills via banca from Mariveles. I'd like more info on how, where, and how much to rent a boat to Fort Mills from Bataan. ETA at Fort Mills will hopefully be at 1000hrs, setting camp at South Dock. From there, I'll lead the group around Topside. On 20 March, the group goes around the island some more, perhaps up Malinta Hill to look for that pom-pom or remains of it. Leaving Fort Mills via banca to Bataan at 1400hrs. Tips, info, suggestions, maps would be greatly appreciated. Currently, the people I'll be with are fellow mountaineers. Anyone interested in meeting us at Tarak and/or Fort Mills, just tell me.

I was about to call it a night when I checked this board and remembered my post on this thread.... ;D
Apparently, I only have one locally published book on Bataan, the aforementioned book by the doctor.
It's titled "Doctor in Bataan" by Manuel E. de Veyra, MD. A thin book (just over a 100 pages) and an old one apparently (published 1991). I got it at the bookfair for only P20.00. Haven't read it yet.
Somewhat related, but only just, is "Clark Field and the US Army Air Corps in the Philippines 1919-1942" by Richard B. Meixsel. I reckon batteryboy is familiar with this book, and I'll leave it to him to critique it. I got it at the bookfair as well, P200.00.
The other book I got from the bookfair isn't a locally published one, but I'll mention it nonetheless. "Tears in the Darkness - The Story of the Bataan Death March and its Aftermath" by Michael Norman and Elizabeth Norman.

I recently bought a few what appears to be locally published WW2 books on Bataan. One is by a doctor, name escapes me, about the Death March. I'll go look it up when I get home later and post the title here. It's a thin book, I haven't read it yet (it's in my to-read list). As for where to buy, every August/September is the Manila International Bookfair. Lately, it's been held at SMX beside Mall of Asia. That's where I bought the book I mentioned above. It was in one of the local publisher stalls. You can get good books there at a very nice discount. Been attending that for 2 decades, and it's the reason why I have a relatively large personal library at home.

I might do so in the summer, with some mountaineer friends. Plan is to climb Tarak Ridge staying there overnight, descend the following morning to rent a banca to Corregidor where we'll stay for another overnight. Ambitious, yes? ;D
Off topic... it's at Tarak Ridge where Karl (?) and others found that P-40 and Japanese fighter wreckage, right? If so, that would be something I want to see if and when I find myself trekking to Tarak Ridge.

Excellent panorama pix. Awesome. Hey Chad....Like you, I started looking for Cmdr John Bulkeley strolling the pier, but decided that this vessel is some type Philippine Navy (Coast Guard) craft. Besides, didn't Bulkeley usually frequent the facilities on the north side of Bottomside? AFAIK, our Coast Guard is separate from the Philippine Navy and is not considered a part of our armed forces (unlike the USCG). Instead, it is a civilian agency under the Department of Transportation and Communication IIRC. IIRC, the PCG acquired a few Cyclone-class patrol vessels (not these in the pix) from the USN. Pretty vessels, used by USN SEALs AFAIK. PCG craft are in white and orange. PN vessels are in gray such as these in EXO's pix. I think these vessels are locally manufactured (?), well ISTR that some of our patrol craft were locally built.

Excellent pix. Middleside Barracks is one of the ruins I have yet to visit for an extended length of time. One of the reasons I haven't explored it is because I feel the spooks whenever I see it. It's not that I'm sensitive to paranormal stuff, I guess it's because of my very vivid imagination. Perhaps another target destination in the future.
