If you are interested in what the pre-war houses in Manila looked like, one of the very few (maybe the only one left) is on the corner of Felipe Agoncillo st and Josefa Llanes Escoda (pre-war Colorado street and California street) near the Paco Cemetery. It is the former house of Walter Price, an American businessman whose son Joe Price was a guerilla leader on Leyte. In Feb 45 local residents took refuge at the house, however the Japanese came in and slaughtered between 100 and 200 of them. Today the house is used for the “Yakult Philippines Inc.” Address 1461 F Agoncillo Corner Pedro Gil. The house is in the center of this Google Earth image. Attachments:

I agree, and not too healthy for the helicopter pilot to fly slow and low enough to drop a piece of paper, might get shot pretty quick. I've heard about the P-61 being used as a diversion, but never a helo.

This is out of the JPAC report on Lt. Stone:
In February of 1942 2LT Stone, pilot of a P-40, was engaged in aerial combat with a Japanese Zero in vicinity of “Cagon Tarak” or Tarak Ridge (N 14° 30.276´ E 120° 29.542'), near the top of Mt. Mariveles, on the southern end of Bataan, Luzon, Philippines. 2LT Stone was one of five P-40s providing security on a reconnaissance mission. Upon return from the mission, the P-40s engaged a group of six Zeros. 2LT Stone was attempting to elude a Zero and was going in and out of clouds. He then flew into a cloud, which enveloped the top of Mt. Mariveles, and did not come back out. There are several eyewitness reports. Each report is the same with few exceptions. 2LT Stone was evading a Zero, and flew into a cloud covered area near a peak (Cagon Tarak) of Mt. Mariveles. No one saw a parachute and no one actually saw the aircraft crash due to cloud cover. A search the next day revealed the Zero and its pilot but not the P-40.
This case concerns a P-40 loss from 9 February 1942. 2d Lt Stone was lost during a dogfight with a Japanese fighter on 9 February 1942. In 1948 the American Graves Registration Service reported sighting wreckage possibly associated with this plane on Mt. Mariveles on the Bataan Peninsula. The hazardous terrain and conclusion that the unstable landslide conditions precluded an AGRS recovery at that time. No other record of this plane or any remains recovery has been discovered. There is no Missing Air Crew Report for this loss incident. Mr Wes Stone’s search for his brother recently included a trip to Bataan, where he was put in touch with the Battlin’ Bastards of Bataan, and Mrs. Edna Binkowski (who has informed JPAC of other local leads and informed JPAC about Mr. Stone’s search.) Mr. Stone and his friend Mr. Bucaro will visit JPAC in 1 March 2005. I have previously interviewed Mr. Stone about the case and made copies of the information that Mr. Stone had thus far collected. Mr Wes Stone, a retired airline pilot and USAAF B-24 pilot, and Mr. Bucaro, a retired FBI agent and USN pilot, are remarkably clear-eyed about the prospects for investigation, but nonetheless urgent. The IDPF and other documents collected support further JPAC investigation. A witness had reported that an American P-40 had crashed near the top of Mt. Mariveles in or about February 1942. The location recorded as “Cogon Tarak” correlates with the 1km circle depicted on the maps below.

The old cemetery, called a "Native Cemetery" in a 1909 map, also called "Cemetery Hill" by the Americans, was located right about where the Centeral Bank of the Philippines building is. s1221.photobucket.com/albums/dd480/dmether/Fort%20Abad/I added the map and three pictures from around 1899 to my photobucket album.
