Hi Chad, That is a great section of a Subic map you posted. I have been trying to visit as many of the buildings as possible (time/security guards allowing) before they disappear and so if you have any more sections of the map or even a list of building numbers and what they refer to it would be very welcome. As I will be passing through Subic sometime next week I will look around ivo the church for any memorial to the POWs of the Oryoku Maru. This website also details a more recent memorial: www.hellshipsmemorial.comBut at least on a quick glance does not say where in Subic it is.

Thanks fots, so now for the next question:
Does anyone have (or is it posted here) the typical layout of coastal defence search light batteries ?

so far my building identification has stalled but I am seeking a bit more information:
- Does anyone have a map showing the Fort Wint / Subic Bay minefields?
- On the maps, what do the small shields (No.1 & 2) on the southern tip of the island signify?
Thanks

Following a return trip to the island I managed to see some more sites, including the Magazine which is not for those with a fear of getting trapped underground with its very tight entrance and half destroyed ceiling. There was also a toad and large gecko type lizard inside which is a reminder that snakes may be present - given that entry requires sliding feet first into an unseen area this is particular worry! I found a number of other structures which do not appear to have been shown in the previous postings but it will take me some time to work out where exactly they were, what they might have been and if they are just different perspectives of 'known' buildings. With the island being so overgrown this image (taken within the building) may give an idea of how hard it is to see man made objects against the mass of small trees, bushes and other plants. Referring back to previous posts: The magazine (like the Battery Warwick magazine) had an inner bar door: On the question of the removal of the JE of Battery Jewell, there are red crosses, triangles and lettering found in various places on the island (including Battery Jewell) which are associated with esotericism and (due to the placement of some of them) the performance of rituals. There may or may not be a connection.

I had assumed, without really thinking about it, that the circles on the chart were all specified anchoring points ??

This is my personal view, and I understand others may differ, but I believe respect is due to any decent man who dies on the battlefield. The same men who were Kamikaze pilots for Japan would no doubt have been the volunteers for the tough missions if they were Americans, and those who deliberately spent the war hiding behind desks would have done so whether they were British, American or Japanese.

Rumours of Submarines: Saw this in a trip finder review: (the staff) "Toured us for free around sites of interest, including old gun emplacements and submarine, yes thats right, submarine facilities entrance, al-be-it blocked because of danger and no, i do not think that that was a P'noy hyper-bole!" The mine casement: and from the resort website, along with baby sea turtles in their natural environment of the bamboo tray and 'creature' (2 birds facing each other), they do mention the military past: But don't be put off this is a great place for a daytrip and I found all the staff when I visited very helpful and easy going (essential when wandering around ruins)

Battery Flake: its interesting how graffiti changes from vandalism to historical interest. USS Intrepid was (so my internet tells me) on Vietnam duty that year. At present its only PHP200 for the day trip. I am planning to return within the next couple of weeks if anyone is interested (driving from Manila) Attachments:
