Fots,
Thanks for a fascinating look into the development of the Malinta Tunnel system. Thanks too to your "subcontractors" Batteryboy and Armyjunk. As a civil engineer I am quite impressed with what was achieved by the Corps of Engineers in a relatively short time.

I second fots' message. By the way, Armyjunk also posted some wonderful historical aircraft photos on the Coast Defense Study Groups' website some time ago. Thanks for them too.

Chad,
It is definitely the same shelter. Compare the shape of the tree branches appearing above the left edge of the shelter roof and the long pole resting on the tree. It is also in both views.

Hi Guys,
This is an interesting topic. In an old issue of the Journal of the American Aviation Historical Society there is an article on captured US aircraft and how a USAAF pilot (Lt Snead) demonstrated a P-40E fighter to his captors. Very strange indeed. If you trawl the web you should come across a photo of two captured B-17Es and a B-17C or D in formation over Mount Fuji.

Okla,
There was a "4-piper" USS Peery, so "Perry" could refer to Peery.

Hi Patty,
I think Res stands for Resident. It is a common designation in many hospitals.

Hi Okla,
This may be a bit off-topic, but the poor USN torpedo plane pilots had the same problems with the Mk 13 torpedos. At the Battle of Midway, in particular, the aircrews of the three torpedo squadrons (plus USAAF B-26 bombers) displayed incredible bravery to launch torpedos that were next to useless at the Japanese fleet.
