A very interesting post, also because of the connection of the little-known battery with well-known figures from the USMC. Earl Ellis had a fascinating and ultimately tragic life (Google him).

Hi Karl,
Thanks for the interesting inputs on the USS Monterey. I'm amazed that a vessel with so little freeboard could undertake ocean voyages.The thing is almost a submarine! The Lee rifles are interesting. I would have thought that US sailors would have been provided with Springfields.
