Was in Manila on Friday, 21 Oct, was supose to meet EXO and visit the AFP museum but a visit to the American WWII cemetery took a lot longer than we expected. At the cemetery came across the headstone of Louis Van Schaick, awarded the MOH in 1901, citation: "While in pursuit of a band of insurgents was the first of his detachment to emerge from a canyon, and seeing a column of insurgents and fearing they might turn and dispatch his men as they emerged one by one from the canyon, galloped forward and closed with the insurgents, thereby throwing them into confusion until the arrival of others of the detachment." Near Nasugbu, Batangas, Philippine Islands, 23 November 1901 What is interesting is, he died a few days after being liberated from a POW camp in the Philippines. Until earlier this year his headstone didn't have the Medal of Honor on it, until a family member visited and pointed that out. His actual medal was given to a friend to hold onto before he went into the POW camp. Word is, it was bought on Philippine EBay for $1000, no idea where it is now. Attachments:
