Hey Guys....In the first photo of the P-40 (the two page magazine spread with tents in the background, etc and that group of Japanese troops gawking at the aircraft). I notice one unusually tall (compared to his compadres) onlooker in the crowd. Could this man, also be an American Enlisted Groundcrewman? I can't discern if his headwear is the usual Japanese cap with the laces in the back and short bill or a baseball type USAAF mechanica cap. Also it would appear that he might have leggings on or is adorned in extremely unmilitary short shorts, thus probably denoting him as one of the Emperior's men. All the, obvious, Japanese troops have their shirts tucked in. This guy has his long shirt tail hanging out. Reminds me of myself, way back when, lounging around the Squadron area when off duty. Just wonderin'. Cheers.

Hmm...from his height I'll bet he's Anglo, but the hat and untucked shirt makes me think he could be civilian somehow. A wild, wild SWAG: he's from the Del Monte Corporation, greeting the newly arrived conquerors. If I recall correctly, several airstrips were built on the company's plantation. Here's a blow up: And for comparison:

Hey Chad....You may well be correct. Notice the guy, immediately to the right of the "Anglo". He seems to be wearing the same type hat as our tall guy. The blown up shot appears to show the suspect Anglo as having a bare left leg, at least up to the thigh, unless his trouser leg is skin tight and since 1942 was way before the appearance of leotards, except for Ballerinas, I gotta think this dude is attired in "short shorts". I ask you...will the answer to this question affect the course of World History? I think not, but I still enjoy all this conjecture. Don't you and your "leader".

Excellent pictures - I hadn't seen any of them, except the one from the Japanese "yearbook"-type publication.

Great board! Im curious if anybody has some insight on the 3rd PS's markings, Dec 1941? I believe I have all the other PS's (17th, 21st, 20th, 35th) markings nailed down (Dec 1941), but I am drawing a blank on the 3rd. TIA' Jerry Phillips I'm looking for markings for P-40E's from 17th PS. Can you assist? Also looking for any photos or markings of Buzz Wagner and John Brownwell's P-40's. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks

As with the 3rd, while I have seen plenty of photos of the 17th's P-26s and P-35As in the Philippines, nothing with the "Snow Owl" once they got o.d. P-35As or P-40Es.
