I read a book about "Lady Be Good" back in my teens, a few years back. Very sad tale, I think it was surmised that they were having problems with beacons/radio navigation after a bombing run to Naples, and that the crew was turned around, and thought they were actually heading towards sea instead of away from it. It actually overflew its base, and flew on into the desert wilds for another 2 hours before the hopelessly lost crew was forced to abandon the fuel starved aircraft. All bodies save for 1 were eventually recovered.
It was the crews and the bombers 1st and last mission. Makes you wonder that if they had someone proficient in celestial navigation, if things would have had a happier ending.

"Lady Be Good" was found 440 miles south of Benghazi in April 1959. In March 1960 five of the nine crew members were located. On one of the bodies (Lt. Toner) a diary was found, he had recorded what happened to them from 4 to 12 April 1943. By the 11th they had run out of water and were going blind. On the 12th five of them laid down and never moved again. Two guy went on ahead, their bodies were discovered miles away in an area that had 500' sand dunes. The navigator was also found, his parachute had failed to deploy. The last member of the crew of 9 was never found.

Batts, excellent thought. Naturally sand blasted.

This find is definitely legit. One can download from a British newspaper website numerous photos taken of the aircraft by members of an oil exploration party. The pilot was a Sgt Dennis Coppings of the RAF. His parachute, which he apparently used as a makeshift tent, was found next to the aircraft. The serial number plates of the airframe and engine are still as clear as 70 years ago. Yes, I also feel for Sgt Coppings.
