Attached is a close up of the famous Lateral #12 tunnel image en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Correg-malinta-tunnel-inter.jpgIs this Irving Strobing? It looks like it to me. I have a high-resolution image of this file. I know it was taken by Paul Wing and Col. John Vance is the man with arms on his hips. Does anybody know who else is in this photo or have a list of the Signal Corps and Finance Dept.? I found Strobing's house on Google Maps. It's pretty run down. He doesn't have any kids that I know of so I haven't been able to contact the family. I'm curious what they did with all the letters the family received in 1942. Thanks Scotisle NYC Attachments:

I see some resemblance to him... There must be more IDs to that famous tunnel photo... (Late entry: your link seems to be snafu'ed so here is a low-res copy. The possible Mr. Strobing looks to be just right of center, I believe.)

His final messages were translated and posted on a site several years back. Was able to download the .WAV files. Interesting

Hey John....Don't hesitate to correct me if I am in error, but wasn't the Signal Section located beyond that "partition" shown toward the rear of the lateral? The folks, seated, with calculating machings, etc, as I have always understood it, are Finance Section people. Somewhere in the murky past I have gotten the notion, that the man, just to the right of the NCO (M/Sgt ), is the Signal Officer. The "suspect", Cpl Strobing, I suppose, could have been in the Finance Section, shooting the breeze, etc, and was included in the photo. I can see a resemblance between the fuzzy photo and the postwar shots of the possible Corporal. I say, again, I love this stuff. Cheers. Postscript...One thing that does puzzle me, is this....If the Signals Section for the whole Corregidor Headquarters is crammed into that small area, in the rear recess of that Lateral, it would seem to be a "shoe string" operation. I would think, of all the HQ Departments/Sections, they would have a Lateral, etc all their own. Not important, but I find it curious. As I said, I love this stuff, but it runs me nuts more than it should.

Naval intelligence had a much bigger signals station in their own tunnel on Monkey Point, according to John Prados.

Just got a copy of Col. John R. "Jack" Vance's memoir, DOOMED GARRISON. Col. Vance was head of the Finance Dept. He names everyone but the man with his back to the camera. Vance identifies this man as PFC True. Looking at the Mansell Database, it could be Joe Wheless True, but that True was promoted to Technical Sargeant while a POW, so I think that might be the wrong person.
I will post the names and histories of everyone in the photo soon.

Well, I'm stumped. Vance labels the man in my original post as "PFC True" but there's no record of a PFC named True in the Mansell Database or in the National Archives AAD. However, I found this:
We shared lateral 12 with finance office, and we were in the back. There is a picture you see all the time of the finance office guys, and I was just in the back there with the signal section, but you couldn't see us. (PACIFIC WAR STORIES: in the words of those who survived, page 98)
Whaddya think? Could this mean it was Strobing?
BTW, I'm posting while ignoring the two feet of Sandy's flood water outside my door. Weird.
