First Flag of Liberation on Corregidor.
76 years ago this happened on Corregidor!
Ze002. The dramatic image of the WWII image of Paratroopers raising the first US flag on Corregidor on the 16th Feb. 1945. T/5 Frank Guy Arrigo accompanied by Pfc Clyde I. Bates raised the flag. Photo courtesy of Corregidor.org. That is the reason we are here, this was the first step of the Liberation of Corregidor in 1945.
The virus from China in 2020 practically killed the tourist business in the world, and the Corregidor Foundation Inc is hurting. They have tried everything.
Since the family and I just returned home from abroad after 15 months absence I made this one of my main goals to commemorate this event. Because of the virus it is not easy to travel in the Philippines for such an event.
I approached the Corregidor Foundation (CFI), talked to the event coordinator Madam Melody Bondoc and emailed with the CFI Operation Consultant, Mr. Jerry Rollin. They responded most favorably, gave me instructions what to do etc.
CFI responded further and wrote on the 8th Feb. 2021:
Karl,
We are making a great effort to make a proper remembrance on 16 February.
It is the first day we will run a ferry from Manila. I plan that all the visitors will meet at the Flag Pole site at around 1130 on the 16th after their tour of topside and before they go to South Beach for their lunch.
We have the flag and the pulley and rope. Is there anything else you would like us to do? Will you make a small speech to the visitor to explain the significance of the Memorial and the Flag?
regards,
Jerry

I was able to visit Corregidor for 4 days, (15th to the 19th Feb.), was able to stay at the MacArthur Lodge for 1000 peso a night, this establishment also fed me for a reasonable price and I tried to look at as many historical venues as possible to see how it looks now after my 21 months absence. In the coming weeks I have much to present.
First a few pictures about the main event:
U684. The Camaya ferry arrives on Corregidor.
U685. The first passengers step on the Island of Corregidor.
U686. The CFI Operation Consultant is interviewed by PTV on Corregidor Island.
U687. CFI personnel and the 503d PRCT Heritage friends raise the 48 Star Flag on the Corregidor Liberation First Flag Memorial/Marker.

U689. Some of the Corregidor visitors did make it to the Corregidor Liberation First Flag Memorial/Marker, and I did say some words for the occasion.
U690. Some of the Corregidor visitors did make it to the Corregidor Liberation First Flag Memorial/Marker, and I did say some words for the occasion.
