Hello everyone! Back feeling chipper again. I chatted with the manageress of Corregidor Inn recently and the re-opening is looking like June, great news for all of us! I have some pictures and questions from the 12" I found at Bottomside, so here we go.... I would like to see a clearing around this artifact, should I borrow a lawnmower in November? I KNOW there is a story attached to this canon and how it came to rest here.

I saw these markings "ARSENAL 1899" and W....LIGT maybe. Any ideas? The steel company I guess.

In these 2 photo's you can see a trench that runs behind the POW camp, I saw evidence of that on my visit but with broken slabs of concrete all around, the slabs were small though so I think the trench was lined at one point. I think maybe it is a rain water run-off from the Malinta Hill.

My all time favorite era on Corregidor, she was so perfect in those days! In this photograph the canon lies near what was the SSE corner of the Quartermaster's Machine shop and Lumber shed area...bottom left of the photo. I was a little discouraged that I did not find any evidence of the slipway and its workings but it too was blown to smithereens and I was starting to feel poorly at this point.

One more tidbit, in the 1936 map, I believe this to be #511 which is beside #538 labelled "fire apparatus shelter" and "machine shop storehouse". The road photo is coming from North Dock past Lorcha Dock, my back is to the small hut like building. I have only JUST realized the this piece of roadway was a later addition as the original went from the trolley bridge around the Q.M. Machine Shop and then onward to North Shore Road. Amazing...every time I do something I find something else!!!!!!

Hi T2,
Thanks for some more interesting stuff. As regards the markings on the 12inch barrel they could read "WATERVLIET ARSENAL 1899". I suppose the barrel was a spare for one of the 12inch batteries.
Regards,
Fortman

Excellent thank you fortman. Ahh HA maybe the canon was in the Q.M. machine shop for outfitting at a later date and the building simply got demolished around it!!!

That is one FABULOUS swag. Yes, that could very well be why it is located no where near a battery. Clearing the debris of a smashed building would be easy, moving a 12 ton monster like that, difficult to say the least. Good job, T2!
