Gary Juanico has been in contact with me today. He came across our site in 2003, and first visited Negros back in 2000, including Mt Mandalagan and Hills 4055 & 3155. He's grandson of USAAFFE M/Sgt Felipe S. Penaranda, who was MIA on Panay in 1943. He's since moved to Negros and tells me that this is the view from out of his window. He's interested in relics, and following the history of the fighting on Negros. Za316. Negros Island Hills View from a window from the area around Silay on Negros Island, Philippines.. Za317. Note from XO: What might be of topical interest, given the screwing over of all of us by Photobucket, is that the images on this post were sent to me via the Facebook Messenger system, and I have posted them as a test to see whether Facebook images could be linked to display here. How's I do it? I right mouse-clicked on the image, opened the "Open link in new tab", copied the link address, and then pasted it into the forum using the "Picture" button. Seems to work! - XO – 2017-10-17 Note from Karl: XO posted these pictures from Facebook but it seems after a certain time span these Facebook hosted pictures disappear also. So they were reposted from friendlier server today

Hi, this is my first time on any kind of forum, so I hope the message gets through. My son has just moved out to Negros and I am going to visit him in three weeks' time. I want to start getting into the history of the fighting in the Philippines and I want to climb up Hill 3155 to see where the 160th Infantry Regiment attacked.
Can anyone offer me any help or advice in locating the hill and the point of attack, or any other things on Negros that relate to the fighting there?

EXO, do I understand that right, are there supposed to be pictures showing up? If so, they do not show on my PC?
Roger, confirmed. I will try and find the image source, but suspect that as they were from a third party source, they may have done a "dastardly photobucket disappearance" on us. If I don't have success, I will kill the thread.- EXO

Karl, whatever images were there before are now gone, making the thread meaningless. I won't do it now, but the next time I see it, and if the member hasn't updated it, I will delete the entire thread.

Happychap, when Steve Foster and I visited, he made the arrangements as he'd been there before. From what I can recall of it, there is a local tourism office in Silay, very close to the plaza. They arranged for the hire of a jeepney to take us from Silay to Patag, along the old Tokaido Road. They were most helpful. I think he found them on the net.

Negros WWII Hills Pictures are reposted in this Thread. Original, in the first entry of this thread, 5 images were posted and they were hosted from Facebook. I don’t know why they disappeared, time span or the Facebook page does not exist anymore? Anyway the 5 images are reposted as of today at their original location in this thread from a friendlier server. So, to alert our forum visitors, 2 images are repeated and posted here as a new reply: Za317. While I am not familiar with the actions on Negros, that is a nice M1 bayonet, in practically issue condition. I can only surmise that someone preserved it all these years as it certainly is not a dug relic. There is great info on this website at the 503rd PRCT heritage battalion online and 3155 was named Dolan Hill. It would have been somewhat denuded from Artillery fire etc. during the battle. From the photo, it looks like access and hiking those hills would be very difficult now with that heavy growth; and to find any relics today would be still more difficult. Stuff does not keep well in the tropical environment of the PI.

Bit of a dilemma on bumping this ancient thread or asking new questions... Curious if you had written up a field trip report somewhere on your visit? I live on Negros and plan to pop over to Occidental in a week to try and retrace the Tokaido Road, and look at a few other locations. Thanks! ___ Kludge, I didn't do a full trip report, but there is an intro page at corregidor.org/heritage_battalion/tokaido%20road/tokaido%20road.html
I have also written THE GASTON DELIVERANCE, which was a highlight of the trip. If ever there was a Then and NOW experience, it was there! There is one main road from Silay to Patag, and it was built over the forestry dirt track which was used in 1945. I used an image of it for Vol IV of Bless 'em All. You will pass that way. Bon Voyage!

Fantastic, thanks! Yes, I've read that article. Would you mind if I pull some of Bill's quotes or the action report texts from there for a short video I'm working on? Bill really got straight to the point eh?! Your's is about the most coherent account I've read on this action wrt the chronology. The action reports are all over the place. I'm going to be trying to tie period photos and video footage from the national archives together with new footage from the road and sites as they are now.
The Gaston house and some other haciendas are on the list for another segment I'm working on, focused on the sugar and lumber industries, which MacArthur was so intent on capturing.
Oh, I'm in touch with Garry btw!
