(This thread is started by me based on materials as lately received from Peter Parsons. It is an extract of a letter from Peter to Maurice Francis. - Registrar)
Dear Maurice,
It was only later in my life that I became aware of how Helge Janson was instrumental in saving our family. My father, Chick Parsons, missed the last PT Boat to Corregidor, and then went to plan b, which was to request diplomatic privilege as the Panamian Cónsul. He passed this request through his friend Helge Janson.

This was processed through the Red Cross, Panama and the USA. BY COINCIDENCE, when the request went to State Department, his name was recognized by someone who said, Get Parsons out of Manila. By June of 1942 my dad was released from STIC in order to begin his trip back to freedom. The rest of his story has been told often.

My ending to this part of the story is to mention that the Jansons lived out the war in Manila, on Park Ave, where existed among the most cruel of the POW camps, the elementary school there. The Jansons did all they could to feed and comfort those POWS who were being used as slave labor at the nearby airport as they were marched past the Janson’s home twice a day. They also worked in this manner wherever their help could be used. I do not think they would have been interned in STIC.
I began to search for the Janson family to give it my thanks. The Swedes were of no help whatsoever. But I found the survivors in Connecticut even as Dorothy was in hospital not expected to live much longer. Petra Netzorg was key to my discovery. I got an heartfelt letter off to Dorothy and got an answer that she received the letter and was very happy about it. Mission accomplished. With only a few days to spare.
Peter Parsons

Maurice:
You have once again stubbed your historical toe on another buried gold nugget in your archival excavations, what with your ongoing efforts in documenting STIC internees, this time with the Swedish diplomat Mr. Helge Jansen, a name familiar to most everyone in the allied pre-war community.
In his email attachment, my cousin Peter Parsons has only briefly described this man's efforts in WWII Manila to aid the internees, the underground, and the resistance. I hope your efforts will unearth more of this story.
