The Following is a transcript of a hand written personal letter (The first of 2) from Capt Donald Thompson (Company Commander of L Co, 3Bn, 31st Inf Reg) to my grandmother after the war. My family has a photo copy of the original, which is lost.

These letters are further testimony to the courage, character, integrity and leadership of Major O'Donovan. One of the true heroes of Bataan. Thank you for posting this, Steve. Please share with us any further findings you discover.

Chad, Just to follow up on this conversation from earlier in the year.... I just finished "Blood Brothers, A Medic's Sketch Book" by Eugene Jacobs. His text below: This clinches it I think. Thanks, Steve Unwin In case you don't have a copy - digital download available here: www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/8423Hello Steven, Many of the Cabanatuan death certificates came from can labels, and Alpine evaporated milk labels seemed to be especially common. I noticed this a year or so ago while reviewing many of the camp's records at the following website (which is a gold mine of information, see the Cabanatuan records on page 3): collections.pvao.mil.ph/BataanDiary/CollectionsI'm guessing that some of the cans came from Red Cross boxes. However, other cans had Russian labels, which I cannot explain! Calvin Chunn's book "Of Rice and Men" (page 130) mentions in the August 19, 1942 entry that breakfast was served with "condensed milk".

Hello Steve,
Interesting find about the condensed milk in Jacob's book. Yes, as you said, that clinches one of those little mysteries that I still continued to wonder about. Thank you for the link to his book, I do not have it, and have been browsing through it. His account about the Oryoku Maru voyage revealed a couple of details I had not read before.
Best, Chad

Thanks Chad, knew you would appreciate it. Thanks for the link to the Death Certificates. Seems like that website has a lot of good stuff that should be available on an american website.
