Hi everyone, it's been a while since I logged in. I am trying to help someone who is looking for information on a POW who died at Cabantuan in 1942.
Would anyone happen to have more information on SSgt Raymond E. Stoufer (ASN 06925030) who served in the 2nd Observation Squadron, 27th Bombardment Group (Light), V Bomber Command, US Army Air Forces. He was taken prisoner by the Japanese. He died while a POW at the Cabanatuan Prison Camp, Philippines. The official date of death is November 2, 1942. He was only 29 years old from Fort Smith, Arkansas. I’m particularly interested in the circumstances surrounding him becoming a prisoner and his cause of death. Thank you!

Hello 1942, He is buried at the Manila American Cemetery, Plot N Row 9 Grave 56 (ABMC). I don't have any specific information on his capture, but the defending role that the Provisional Air Corps Infantry Regiment played as the II Corps collapsed to the Japanese assault is well documented in the history books. Unless he managed to escape to Corregidor, he almost certainly participated in the Death March to O'Donnell, transferring later to Cabanatuan.

The Second Observation Squadron was actually a separate unit from the 27th BG - it had been in the Philippines since before WWI. It had a long and interesting history. But it's observation planes didn't last long after the war started. I was friends with a couple of pilots from that unit.
