A small group of us are getting together on Corregidor to commemorate the 75th Anniversary of the retaking of Corregidor. Earlier this week I wrote to Corregidor Foundation Inc., to find out whether they are planning anything for the anniversary. I am a big zero on the planning, it’s virtually all I can do just to plan to get me and a few friends to Corregidor on the day. I asked CFI whether they could get the old Ft. Mills flagpole working again, because when I saw it earlier this year the flagpole truck and the halyard were broken.
The following is CFI's reply:
C O R R E G I D O R F O U N D A T I O N I N C .
Hello everyone,
I raised the matter of the 75th Anniversary and commemoration day at the Corregidor Foundation Board Meeting. They are very supportive. They see it not only as a commemoration but as a way to generate interest in order to get help (financing) for continuing renovations that are required.
A Committee (please don't moan) is being set up this week to organise the event. All parties will be asked to contribute with ideas as much as they can. Funding, which is the biggest issue, will be their priority.
In order to broaden the potential help they will be considering expanding the activities to include the Pacific War. As I am sure know, the Pacific War Memorial and the museum are both in need of renovation and this is a good opportunity to get many more countries involved. 5 Embassies have already agreed to help with the renovation of the Beach Resort Cottages.
The Chairman of the Committee is likely to be either a Senator, the Secretary of Tourism or a General from the Department of Defence. Again funding is the biggest problem and they can get it.
As things develop I will keep you informed. If you have any specific ideas please send them to me at this stage. Later I will put you in touch directly with the Organising Committee.
On another matter I am sure you will be please to heard that today we were given 3,100 fruit bearing trees by the Department of Natural Resources. One thing that has always bugged me is that there do not seem to be as many birds around as there should be. Monkeys eat the eggs and there is not enough fruit. Hopefully this will now be put right along with the reduction of the monkey population.
