I am updating this book, originally published in 2013. The update will increase the size from standard landscape 10 × 8 IN. (25 × 20 CM) to large landscape .13 × 11 IN. (33 × 28 CM). In practical terms, larger illustrations, larger fonts (no more tired eyes.)
For those unfamiliar, it is a collection of the Unit Histories written in the Japanese prison camps to record what occurred prior to their being surrendered. Their authors and custodians never doubted that to be caught with these scraps of paper was a likely death sentence. Whether or not they had premonitions that these histories would survive them, that would be the way it turned out for many.
As to what happened to the lost histories of the other batteries and units surrendered on Corregidor, particularly those of the 59th C.A.C. (which are under-represented here), I cannot speculate. Each unfound history is but a tiny part of a tragic policy of Japanese Imperial cruelty and indifference. Each surviving document is a triumph of individual bravery and collective defiance in the face of a treatment so vile and abhorrent, it defines all that civilization considers evil.
At the end of the line of these men who have preserved these histories, are George Munson (an early collector) and Al McGrew (himself a Corregidor survivor), who encouraged me to put these into the public domain via my website Corregidor – Then and Now, where they presently reside.
This book is a part of my succession plan. Websites are transient and ephemeral things, and I have no one to carry on my work yet. So I am publishing them as a collection, because no one else has. I'd be glad to hear from anyone who has any materials which might be added to LOST & FOUND, or any comments how to improve it.
