Corregidor Visit 2006, 30th Aug. to the 2nd Sep. Alone
Day Three, 1st Sep. this is now the first post from this album of the 3rd day on Corregidor, 26 images.
Note: The pictures are no longer in the order they were shot and posted because of Photobucket!
Day Three, 1st Sep (WWII Start Anniversary)
Walked to the Philippine heroes Memorial took pictures there and continued to the Denver Hill Water Tank. Walked down the ridge to the north but there was no concrete trench but most likely there was an earthen one.
Found the Denver Tunnel entrance, then back up to the Denver Ridge and found the two post WWI AA gun block bases, the east one is a little bigger. The battery Maxwell Keyes Emergency Gun Control is nearby.
Then I looked at the two Navy Intercept structures that may had a garage built in on the east sides and the small square water tank on 4 concrete posts nearby. There were more concrete blocks for extensions of those buildings.
Continued passed the 155mm Panama Mount, to the air field, passed cemetery #1 and down to the south beach. Rounded East Point, going west on the north shore, rounded Cavalry Point and up the Philippine Heroes Memorial. The weather was good but it was hot and had drunk 4 liter of water by 2pm.
Day Four, 2nd Sep (VJ Day Anniversary)
Checked out, shot the breeze with Ron, aka Kalbo and the old Gentleman guide who lives on Corregidor. Then went home, boat, car etc. Another great visit to the “Rock”.

A closer view of the last image, the long south shore of the Corregidor
----------------------------------
A Mural to the Resistance in Mindanao.
--------------------------------------
A stature honoring the women of the Philippines.
---------------------------------
Again from the rear, it had steps going down into it here. The Battery Maxwell Keyes Control Station.
-----------------------------------------------
Another view of the west gun block.
--------------------------------
Close-up view of the last image.
-------------------------------------
Continuing further east one gets a nice view of Caballo Island, the ex Fort Hughes and now a Philippine Navy ammo place.
-------------------------------------------
Corregidor from a 1:50000 map and I marked some of the spots I mentioned in this album.
---------------------------------------
Giving me a treat, the next morning (2nd Sep) I didn't walk I went for the treat, breakfast at the Corregidor Inn.
-----------------------
Here is a Mural to the Resistance in Leyte.
-------------------------------------
Here is a Mural to the Resistance in Samar.
-------------------------------------
Here is the east gun block of the two in the Battery Denver area. Notice my bolo.
--------------------------------
Hey! I made it, struggling thru grass and bush; I will be able to descend down to the beaches now.
------------------------------
I liked this picture and I put it to the front, I am about to descend to the beaches on the Corregidor Tailend.
----------------------------
In the distance with the coconut tree is the North Point. Here many Japanese died the ones that had drifted too far east, to right here.
--------------------------------
In this Philippine Memorial are many sculptural murals remembering the struggle for freedom or war to defend the country. The Filipino-American War.
---------------------------------
It was a long walk back to the Lorcha Dock, this is the dock where MacArthur left to go to Australia, guess who got him off the 'Rock'--the Navy of course.
-------------------------------------
Looking down the middle, ahead there is where the visitors normally enter the Memorial complex.
------------------------------
Looking west, Geary and Breakwater Points are at the left, San Jose-,Camp-,Ordinance and Monkey Points in the middle of the image.
--------------------------------------------
Near the North Point, Filipinos trying to make a living, picking shell animals. That's Mt. Samat in the distance.
----------------------------------------
Near the Row House, in the old Spanish Fort is a pre WWII gun shelter. CFI placed a generator there for the CFI Facilities.
--------------------------
Next I tried to find the entrance to the Denver Tunnel and did.
--------------------------------
OMNI pilots from Clark at the MacArthur Café, yes on this day their aircraft landed on the Corregidor field.
-----------------------------------
On a walk to Battery Denver, one usually has to walk thru the Philippine Heroes Memorial. I took advantage of that and had a good look around. This is the stature of President Quezon.
------------------------
On the Denver Hill, going east, once you are passed the Battery Denver position it gets grassy.
------------------------------------
President Osmena; his stature.
