The book will have to wait awhile okla, your St. Louis Cardinal's are in the World Series against my Rangers!
Your Cardinal's (and my Uncle Johnny's) came from nowhere and beat a lot of good teams to get where they are.
Good luck!

Dec. 23rd, 1941 Manila
" Three hours later the truck dropped the pilots off at the hospital.
The Air-corps had taken over the Jai Alai , one of the smartest clubs in Manila, as an overflow for STERNBERG HOSPITAL.
The duty surgeon insisted on Erickson being admitted for a few days. Besides his leg wounds, he was running a high fever, and the doctor feared the onset of malaria.
The Jai Alai was an "officers only" hospital. The patients and the staff inherited the chefs, food, and staff of the club. For the first day he was there, he dined sumptuously on steak with onions and mushrooms, broiled lobster, fresh salmon, and Viennese pastry,. Served with snowy white linen and silver, by Filipino waiters in natty green uniforms.
On his second and last day at the hospital the authorities heard of the luxury, and everyone reverted to plain Army rations."
A question................ Is the Jai Alai Stadium still in existence near the Luneta? I saw it in the 70's, couldn't figure out the scoring..............

Hry Phantom...And good luck to you and the Rangers. I have been a Cardinal fan all my life. Being born in Missouri and living there until moving to Oklahoma in 1944 it just goes with the territory. Ironically, my local Tulsa Drillers (Texas League AA) were the AAA Farm team for the Cardinals for many years, then became the AA farm club for the Rangers. Due to this fact Tulsa is kinda split on this particular Series, but still is generally Cardinal country. You guys are favored though. It is such a miracle that the Birds are in the Series. I can't be too disappointed if they lose. I feel that everything since getting in the playoffs has been "gravy". This subject is afar from Sternberg Hospital, Corregidor, etc, but I betcha, back in 1942, there were many Cardinal fans on "The Rock", though their primary concern, of course, was far from baseball. Cheers.

Fireball, Thanks so much for the picture of the beautiful building I knew so well, and the story of Jai Alai buildings demise. What a shame.
All over the world great structures with significant history from bygone era's are disappearing. Taking with them the memories of those who knew them, and any possible future memories of those who won't know what they missed.
It reminds me of all the huge old Acacia and Mahogany trees that fell "by mistake" from the park in front of the Manila Cathedral a few years ago. The grandeur and shade is gone, but the new trees will grow right?

Clearly between the 1920's and 1941 the whole place had changed.
The Phantom mentions the 1920 information as saying there were "30 long one story buildings" when in the 1940 photo we can see that there are far less than 30 and most are two story.
Is there anything more about it closer to the 1940-41 era?
