Paul - If this isn't a 3" rapid fire coastal gun I'll kiss your butt. This pic was taken overlooking Subic on Mt. Santa Rita in 1977. I wonder what happened to it? www.subicbaymarines.com/images/1977/images/JL71.jpgAs usual, - Gene Frederickson Riverside, CA Note from Karl: Replaced the above picture this date 23rd Dec. 2019 from saved material in my PC.

I was stationed on the Mountain from 1973 through 1977. The story on the gun was quite humorous. In the late 60's or early 70's, the Officer in Charge had his crew build the park just outside the compound gate. He called in a few favors to get the gun installed by Public Works. He then planned a big party coinciding with a Commanding Officer's Inspection, inviting a lot of the San Miguel & Subic/Cubi VIP's.
What he did not take into account was that it was the hot & dry season, without wind. The park was build on top of the station's septic tank. Long story short, the OIC's pig roast turned into a big stink. There were pictures left in the bar area when I first got there. Ding Villenueva, the Station Engineer, loved to tell the story.
Thanks for putting a smile back on my face.

This date a question came up about 3 Inch gun on Sta. Rita Mountain in Subic Bay: Dear Karl, I remember seeing a color photograph of Subic Bay during the Vietnam years. It showed a roadside picnic area that appeared to be in the hills overlooking the bay. In the center of picnic area, it appears to be one of the 3-inch guns from Fort Wint. Do you where this roadside picnic area was located and what happened to this 3-inch gun? Regards, Terry McGovern I thought, maybe he is talking about the gun on Sta Rita Mountain. I researched the Corregidor Forum and found this entry. The picture was missing. I searched my PC and found the missing picture because I saved it a long time ago from Marine Barracks web pages. I replaced that picture today and will post 3 more pictures now, two of them also came from the Marine Barracks web pages a long time ago. Ze774. The 3 Inch gun on Sta. Rita Mountain again, date unknown and this time with a person standing next to it. This picture came from the Marine Barracks web pages a long time ago! Ze775. The 3 Inch gun on Sta. Rita Mountain is still there in this undated and not so clear picture. This picture came from the Marine Barracks web pages a long time ago! Ze776. This picture is from the 30th Dec. 2008 from our walk up to Sta Rita Mountain and tower. The picture is approximately the same area as the last picture. The gun is long gone, I’m sure before the Navy departed in Nov. 1992. As to when it was removed and why and where exactly did the gun come from or where it went to, I have no idea. I asked but have been unsuccessful to find out the exact history of the 3 Inch gun on Sta Rita Mountain.
