Bob, beautiful words. Poems are heartfelt baring of the soul. Thanks for sharing it with us at this appropriate time of the year when we reflect on this event with a little more reverence than usual – a time when we have a dwindling number to thank for the sacrifice. Chadhill, I bit on your photo again and ran away with it during my lunch break EXO, I never noticed the Like button. Thanks for the reminder.

Hey All....What a dismal period those first months of 1942 were. Even though our guys went down to defeat in early April and the Rock folded a month later, these two groups held out to the end. Somewhere I have read that British General Percival (maybe Wavell???) proposed to Winston Churchill that the British surrender Singapore earlier than they eventually did. Of course, Churchill told him that this course was unthinkable as long as the American/Filipino troops were still hangin' tough on Bataan. Whether true or not, it does sound like Winston, doesn't it?

It is true okla, I have read Churchills memoirs a few times and I'm due for another. He was very conscious of the implications of Singapore surrendering so quick while US/Filipino forces were battling for months on end - Especially after being advertised as a great "Fortress" for decades. Not to sully the honor or fighting spirit of Brits, they obviously had their hands more than full in various theaters around the world. They sent over 2 of the finest warships in the world, and we saw soon enough it was a forlorn effort. It is difficult to compare the 2 campaigns directly, I'd say in general our fighting spirit was much better and it showed. The valiant defense against hopeless odds caused the mighty and aggressive Japanese to lose very much in the way of men and material, and also upset their meticulously planned schedule for conquest. It gave us time to build up initial defense of Australia, which later was to turn into offense. I am proud of the efforts of my countrymen and their allies - Far from shame, I think they are guiding lights on how to conduct oneself in the face of extreme hardship and adversity.
