Hey Jerry...Thanks for posting. Wonder if this is one of those left on the side of the road near Calumpit. There seemed to be too many of our tanks abandoned without being disabled by their crews before"bailing out" and joining the withdrawal southward. Maybe there were instances where sand was put in the fuel tanks, etc, but too many were left intact from I have gleaned over the years. Cheers.

Nice photo, Jerry. I've had these photos stashed away for a while, trying to verify that they were taken on Corregidor. Does anyone know? The first is a Type 97-Kai Shinhoto Chi-Ha tank, and I think the second may be, too. The photo below was said to have been taken on Corregidor in 1952.

Hey Chad...I don't think there is any doubt that the two tanks shown are the same make and model, whatever the Japanese name/number/etc. That first photo has got to be from Corregidor, taken shortly after the surrender. Aren't those POWS, some with duffel/sea bags with their meager belongings slung over their shoulders, trudging along the hillside. I suppose the pic might have been taken at Mariveles. Isn't there some steep terrain just adjacent to that locale, but the picture just has the Corregidor "smell" to it, methinks. Lastly, ain't that an American "duece and a half" truck shown just under the tank cannon barrel in the first photo?

Yes, okla, that top photo struck me as having the "Corregidor look" to it, too. My gut feeling is that we could be looking at a procession of POWs walking around some part of the southwest side of Malinta Hill on the way to the 92nd Garage. Could be seeing pink elephants again, but I almost think there's a vague outline of a tunnel entrance in the top center of the photo. I need to dig up some of fots' images from this area and ponder...
What a hawkeye...you know, okla, I didn't notice it before but I think you're right about what's under the barrel in that first pic.

Hey Chad....I gotta agree. If anybody on the face of our planet has some photos that would clear up our new little Corregidor mystery, it would be him. I see what you think might be the corner of the West Entrance to Malinta. If I let myself get carried away I can envision that indentation in the hillside, just to the left of our possible tunnel entrance as, maybe, being the area of the gasoline storage tunnel. Now, I have really turned my imagination loose. I am seeing smoke from a possible fire rising over a pipe??? giving the illusion that we are peering at the edge of Malinta's west portal. Then, again, could that be a roadway (just beyond the rear end of the Japanese tank) leading up to the tunnel entrance. I had better go drink my fifth cup of coffee, before my too active imagination drives me over the edge before noon. Cheers. Postscript....After one more close look I think you are "right on". I am seeing a dark arch that sure as heck would confirm your initial notion of a tunnel entrance being just to the left of the possible "bon fire". Wonder what those poor unfortunates could be burning if that, in fact, is a fire. Japanese guards ain;t going to stand by and watch American/Filipino POWs destroy documents. I find it dificult that they would permit them to brew coffee or cook rations either. I have gotta get out of here and get my cup of Java before I completely lose it. My Okasan thinks I am nutty enough as it is. As Fots and I have often said, "it's a disease with no known cure". "Rock-itis" would be it's name, I suppose.

I'm on my second cup of coffee, okla, and I think we're smokin' hot here (knock on wood, ol' buddy). For some comparison I found this photo that fots posted over in the Malinta Navy Tunnels thread. I'll dig around some more and be back later...

Hey Chad....I am now thinking that "our" tunnel isn't Malinta, but one of the Navy Tunnels (as is also what I was thinking was maybe the Gasoline Storage tunnel entrance area). I got to thinking that the terrain in front of what we were thinking was Malinta is a bit steeper than what I have always thought the roadway/trolley track route was. Having never been there, of course, I really wasn't sure. Betcha we are on the right track, of course we must await confirmation from our "leader". Postscript...Wonder if that 1940 or 1941 Ford Staff Car would still be under warranty in it's present condition? If I didn't know better I would think that we have a VW Van at the extreme right of this photo. Might be a Willis if, indeed, they were in existence in those dark days. Cheers.
