Being new here...I'm very excited to help. Before I found this site I thought of an idea that would put real attention on the island. I'm not at liberty to say what it is just yet. I would rather not post it publicly for a while until I have done more research. But my wish would be that my idea would work....thus allowing your ideas to work Chuck has it right when he said "we should discuss this in more detail." Anyone willing to actually get together and have a meeting?

Might be difficult - the active members are spread out pretty thin - for a start, I am in Brisbane Australia. About the only time we physically see each other is on Corregidor, usually in January or February. If your idea is any good, it will have to suffer the tempering of public comments sooneror later. Ideas which look good on paper don't always work well in the Philippines. War Plan Orange, is a fairly good example. Some years ago, maybe a decade or two, there was a guaranteed Corregidor redevelopment scheme which Uncle Sam was proposing, under which the USA would take over Topside and run it like a National Historic Battlefield. The Filipino PTB ("Powers that be") didn't like it at all. Say, who is that bloke on the TV show "MYTHBUSTERS" who has the T-Shirt which says "I reject your reality and substitute my own." They should sell them at Manila International Airport, both in Arrivals and Departures. If you are not quite ready, you can private message me and I will introduce you to those who have participated in this topic. So, most of our contact is via e-mail. EXO - per Paul

I have no doubt how corregidor would look if we were a bunch of rich guy's but were not. It would be great if the govts had as much interest in preservation as we do. Most of those who come are probably doing it out of passing curiosity and nothing more. Needless to say without govt support tourism is the main source of support. We have an Island here in Michigan that has an early American fort. 1700's? The Island is quite successfulland may provide some idea's. Personally if I had the cash I would : 1)Put the rail line back in 2) I would reestablish a tourist barrio like existed before the war by the hotel. 3) I would put the golf course back in 4) bike rentals. 5) I would make one of the guns on disappearing carrage in operation (not with a real shell and powder but there are ways.) 6) I would take a building here and there and restore it, such as residence quarters. The rail line would make for a much more interesting tour into some areas the tourist never experience. Anyway here is a link to Macinaw for study www.mackinac.com/content/general/mackinac_photos.html Good ideas all! I could see all of those ideas implemented, if the funding was available. It would not even be necessary to turn Corregidor into a theme park, in order to get the historical, "must-see" areas and exhibits brought back into full comission.

methinks that if, in 1946 when the US granted full independence to the Philippines, we could have worked out some type agreement to allow the US national park service to administer the fortified islands, that many items on the wish lists would have come to fruition. at this late date it would do my 76 year old heart much good to know that the same folks who were looking after gettysburg, shiloh, valley forge, etc were overseeing corregidor and her sister forts. the philippine govt would, of course, have retained full sovereignty over the islands, but the actual upkeep, etc would be performed by an organization that had the knowledge and experience to accomplish this mission. alas, hindsight is 20-20 as harry truman so ably stated way back when.

"Get the powers that be a 1945 jeep to use on the island, enhance the feel of WWII." There is actually a company in Manila that manufactors jeeps and exports them to reenactors. Would be nice to see them driving around the island, could be more for small groups of 2 or 3 tours. Would like to see the museum become more eye-appealing... ex. Be good to see a platoon of Japanese Soliders (on mannequins) with full combat kit, same with US/Filipino Troops to get a better sense of perspective.
Other ideas: 1 Overnight stays in military style encampments, with revelle, rations, drilling, etc. almost a boot camp adventure. 2. Shooting Range to fire US and Japanese weaponry (small arms) 3. Modernize exhibts - computer terminals, Video's of interviews with veterans, etc
Also this is my first post. Sorry I hadnt found this sooner. As an expat lving in Manila for the past 4 years, I look forward to being a steady contributor to this forum. I am very impressed with what I have seen so far on this board. Great to be here

Actually I like that 1945 Jeep idea. The others are not bad either. If the targets for the Shooting Range are snakes then sign me up.
I could say “have a good look around the web site” but we would not hear from you again for six months. Welcome to the board.

"Get the powers that be a 1945 jeep to use on the island, enhance the feel of WWII." Yes, I agree. It should be a part of the requirement for permission to bring/to keep a jeep on to the island, at the very least, that it should be a uniform color of army green or USN grey. The jeeps there make the place look more like an amateur circus than a national park. The museum is, unfortunately, at the bottom of a long list of people who have call upon a very limited budget. It is run on donations. Steps can be taken to make it more engaging, without any significant expenditure. For instance, they could incorporate a non-profit in the USA to accept donations to display. Some time ago, I sought to get some donations for display there. The reaction was " why? if it is of value, it will only disappear.." and I admit, they have a point. I have access to many items that I will not give them because they are unable to display them to the standards that I would require of them. PM us if you want to be included in discussions about getting together with similarly minded ex-pats living here.

Hi Guys
Money is short, but there should always be a plan. Absolute minimum of work is: preserve, ensure access and market the product.
What remains of the structure of Corregidor needs to be preserved. Middleside Barracks is an example of this type of work. Without it being done, in a few years time, Middleside Barracks would be a pile of rubble.
Access needs to be maintained to existing points of interest and extended to allow access to structures such as various command posts, searchlights etc. There is a multitude of other places of interest, just of the track, but hidden by encroaching vegetation.
Marketing the product - what product? Corregidor is quite well covered in tourist related websites. However, the main selling point is backed up by a one day tour. There is more to see than can be covered in one day. Those that do the one day tour and then stay the night don't see much the next day. This is where a second set of tours needs to be implemented. What is seen on the second day? Well, anything that is not seen on the first - all the other batteries, command posts, high ranking officer's accommodation etc.
Party of four? Day trip! Aren't you staying the night? Hey, we have a great package for the second day!
I agree with the need for replicas of the 1945 MB Jeep, bicycles and a front end loader (so I can find those Navy Tunnels).
Regards
