Yes okla, you could not store much in those little cubicles. I do not know but here is my guess as to the purpose of those phone booths. What if each phone booth was the duty station of a radio or phone operator whose function was to pass information from the officers in that station to different batteries and other stations on the island? Could “RIFLES” be the big Coastal Defense gun batteries? They are called rifles at times even though they are huge 6, 8, 10 and 12 inchers. I can’t guess what is the purpose of a booth named “RADIO STOREROOM”.
One of the military historians here may be able to help us with the information.
Regarding the “latrine”, there is an exact duplicate of this up on the top of Malinta Hill. Until I know otherwise, I’ll call them latrines.

Hey Fots....The "rifles" senario makes sense to me, but like you, "radio storeroom" still poses question marks for me as it does you. Back to the "rifles" thing. I would think communications personnel (phone operators, wiremen, etc) would be armed with .45 pistols and wouldn't even have .03s standing in racks except in living quarters or armory/ordnance areas. One Thompson Submachine might be on hand for some kind of "emergency" or maybe not. Just going on how our HQ was set up and we were 30 miles or so from the nearest enemy ground forces. We had .45s handy and one Tommy Gun that none of us could have hit a bull in the butt with at 10 yards. Maybe good 'ole Battery Boy can fill us in on these "cubicles" at Battery Chicago vicinity. Cheers.

Hi All... Fots, thanks as usual. There is much I sent today for you to see, as well as to EXO, to share with all interested. From what i read, I believe that Catalog was a weapons and amo storage spot. The men were all issued rifles, bandoliers and small arms once on alert in as early as late Oct.41. Waldron describes this in his book, also info from both Cornwall and my Dad's papers. The telephone booth type areas were probably covered with doors.. hanks .. more to come. Karol

Can't wait to sip a San Miguel at MaArthur's. My ex- visited the old San Miguel brewery in Manila, in the early 70's,that even the Japs preserved. Is that true?

Hey Karol...Thanks for more "poop" about the troops being issued .03s. That stenciled sign over the cubicle possibly makes a bit more sense now. The Communications Personnel had to stow them someplace while manning their stations at the Battery. It may very well have been the storage area for these weapons while the troops were occupied with their duties. Isn't this forum a "hoot" ?

Hey Fots....I just gotta pass this on to you concerning those pics of the "cubicles" at the Comm Center/Battery Chicago. Try to visualize a senile, 78 year old goat, peering at an image on his PC monitor that shows some battered ruins, and his Wife, peering over his shoulder, inquiring, "why are you so concerned about those decaying, old "closets", are you losing your mind" ? In retrospect, do you think she is on to something? Cheers.

Fots, this is all absolutely awesome. I am going over it again to digest it. Yes, watch out for snakes in the bamboo thickets. The negritos warned us about a species of the bamboo viper in JEST school (Jungle Environmental Survival Training) up at Subic. My wife found one in our back yard at base housing that security came and killed. They are small, green, and easily blend in with the scenery. As I recall, the instructors said that if you were bitten the anti-venom HAD to be administered within a few minutes...

Hey okla, if your wife finds your mind, would she look nearby and see if mine is there too? ;D

Hi chadhill,
That is good information. Scary but good.
Last year I inquired about anti-venom kits at a clinic. (different for each snake species). I got an answer that made it seem very impractical to carry kits for self injection if required. I dropped the idea. Unfortunately I still make the mistake here of accepting the first answer I get. I think I will get a ‘few more opinions' on the matter.
Corregidor has zero kits on the island.
