From Scott,
"Just wanted to bring you up to date on the status of the newspaper article on my Great Uncle's Dog Tags.
The photographer is scheduled for next Tuesday 13 Jan 09 to meet with myself and my Great Aunt to take pictures for the story. Once the story is published I will mail it to you.
Unfortunately during the Christmas holiday the flu went thru my family and I spent a couple of days nursing myself back to health. Not to mention that I got absolutely nothing done that I had planned on doing during my vacation. But I did see that you were able to load a couple of items from the Individual Deceased Folder into the website. Thanks for that.
I keep in touch as events happen."

Matthew's Dog tags have been returned to his family.
I had told Scott that I would try and put the crucial correspondence between Matthew's family and the Army that helped them identify his remains and get him back home on this site.
I stated before that there were 116 pages of correspondence involved in getting Matthew home.
I will describe several pages briefly, as they have similar information requested and acted on by the Army's various departments.
1/ Several pages describe how the dental charts were sent and used to identify Matthew. Each filling is described by his civilian dentist and filled in on dental charts which are mailed to Manila P.I. Several redundant different charts are used over and over.
2/ There are letters identifying Matthew remains as corresponding with an M.I.A. at that time located in Manila. His remains had moved 3 times since his death on Feb. 16th 1945.
First at USAFC Mariveles #1, Bataan, Luzon, P.I. Lot 2, Row 13, grave 1652 Then, USAFC #2 Manila Finally, AG RS MAUSOLEUM, Manila
At this point there is also a reference to his effects........
The following is a letter from the Army to his family.
" Musolino, Matthew d. Private 20,130,787 Killed in action 16 February 1945
Attached is all the information available in Causality Files, Causality Branch; DPRB 201 File and Army Ground Forces Historical Files Operations Report, pertaining to the death ot the above named enlisted man of Company "E" 503rd Parachute Infantry Regiment."

MUSOLINO. MATTHEW D. PRIVATE 20,130,787 COMPANY "E" 503RD PARACHUTE INFANTRY REGIMENT KILLED IN ACTION 16 FEB. 1945
There are lots more letters and form identifying Matthew and how he is to be returned home. Several forms have a blank space in the shape of a Dog Tag at the top left hand corner, where an imprint of the persons dog tag is to be provided. No imprints on any of Matthew's forms as you would expect.
I will report on Matthew's personal effects being returned home at a latter time.

It has been a pleasure for all involved to have been on this journey to bring Matthew's Dog Tags back to his family after all these years.
If you are seeing this thread for the first time, be sure to start at the beginning and see how a member of the 503rd Parachute Unit, that landed on Corregidor Feb. 16th, 1945, fought and died for his country. It's worth the time invested.

MARIVELES HARBOR AND SAN MARCELINO AIRFIELD AERIAL VIEWS IN WWII These two pictures, numbered C2 and C3 in the Flickr album below, came from this document: Terrain Handbook 42, Bataan Zambales, of 1944, from the Allied Geographic Section, Southwest Pacific Area. This document was provided to me by courtesy of Bob Hudson. Both areas are connected to the recapture and liberation of Corregidor. The 34th Inf. departed Mariveles Harbor on the 16th of Feb. 1945 for their assault on Corregidor. One of the Parachute Battalion drop, the 3rd one, was cancelled on the 16th Feb. and were diverted to the San Marcelino Airfield. They then were trucked to Subic and went by sea to Corregidor. Uploaded to Flickr, the Aerial Views from NARA via CDSG, but in this case they are from the US Army and came via Bob Hudson www.flickr.com/photos/44567569@N00/albums/72157658661455655Here are the same two pictures but are just a little smaller: W137 (C3) Mariveles Harbor, Bataan. Looking SE. Oct. 1941. Photo credit US Gov. by courtesy of Bob Hudson. W138 (C2) San Marcelino Airfield, Zambales. June 1944. One Parachute Battalion of the PIR 503d did not jump but landed here and by trucks and water crafts proceeded to Corregidor via Subic Bay on the 16th and 17th Feb. 1945. I will explore this airfield in the future. Photo credit US Gov by courtesy of Bob Hudson. W139 this image is not in the above album. For many years I had wondered where the San Marcelino Airfield had been. It still exists today but is not used right now and it is inside the present boundaries of Castillejos, that was a confusing factor. A sailor friend of mine used this airfield as late as 1990. It is practically butting against the National Highway but as a driver of a vehicle I could not spot it. My friend showed me and the location jives with the above Army image. I will have closer look in the future. I chose to present these pictures in this thread because this thread was a special project of Tom Aring, who recently passed away and he was a much respected friend in our circle of Corregidor Friends.
