I purchased a copy. It contains nice art work and beautiful maps. It has nice silky pages and some interesting pictures that I have never seen before. The book is abridged and lacks depth. Only 96 pages. It isn't remotely worth the $19.95 list price. Go to Abe Books dot com and see if you can get a cheaper one. Four or five dollars would be a reasonable price. Better alternatives are (1) The War in the Pacific, The Fall of the Philippians by Louis Morton and (2) Bataan Our Last Ditch by John W. Whitman. Those are two very, very good, scholarly books that everyone should have.

Hey Battery....I second your motion. These two tomes are my "Catechisms" as pertains to the 1941-42 Campaign. Would be lost without them. I have many of the Osprey series. ranging from Pearl Harbor to Gettysburg and find them very helpful for quick reference, etc, but they just don't have the "clout" (for lack of a better word) that other military history/studies possess. As Munson states, the maps and charts in any Osprey book are excellent. Just my humble. Cheers.

Books, books, books. I estimate that over the last 35 years or so, 100 to 150 Philippine veterans have written books about their war experiences. Almost all centered on POW experiences. All contained at least one or two interesting facts. But, for the most part, the books were at best historical fiction at worst total fiction. In some cases they contained a bunch of lies. I knew some of these men and they were generally sincere in their attempts to record their experiences. However, failed memories do not result in good historical books. My point is, be careful when you read these books and don't take them as gospel. If you have a good knowledge of the subject you should be able to separate fact from fiction. One book that I highly recommend is, "Amid th' Encircling Gloom" by Al McGrew. Dr. Paul Ashton's two books are very good. Eric Morris' book "Corregidor the End of the LIne" and its two or three other titles contains some excellent stories and some straight from the outhouse. You have to know your subject to be able to pick out fact from fiction. Unfortunately, there are almost no books on the CA regiments. "Beyond Courage" is suppose to be the history of the 200th and 515th CAs. Unfortunately, the author didn't know the subject and got too much material from the outhouse. So much for my complaining.

Along side of Morton's & Whitman's book, Bunker's War, The diary of Col Paul D. Bunker and Doomed at the Start by William H. Bartsch complete my collection.
Thanks to sites like this I know now what "C1" means as it was mentioned many times by Col. Bunker. Doomed at the Start is about the American Pursuit Pilots 1941-'42.

I think my favorite book on the Philippine campaign is Rogues of Bataan by Ted Williams, Its a real adventure story of the Marines that had a SCR270B radar set and the odd position of being a small Marine unit dealing with the Army. Read it if you get the chance, here in the states you should be able to find a copy. I think I read somewhere that more books were written on the early Philippine campaign and the aftermath than any other campaign. I have no idea if that is true, but there is a lot of them. Most I find the first chapters interesting, after the Fall its the same story over and over again. A very sad story but the same.
