Hey EXO...With the addition of a large (ex USSR) Fleet Carrier to the Red Chinese Navy, I was wondering if there is some type agreement/arrangement between the US and the Republic of The Philippines for some type of rapid American buildup at Subic and Clark without sorting out Sovereignty issues. I am not talking about a return to the old mutual defense arrangement that was in force for many years, but a quick strengthening of American forces on some sort of temporary basis. I realize that my question is probably oversimplified, but I think you get my drift. With all the Chinese saber rattling that we have seen recently, surely Fil/US planning has been going on to some degree. What say you?

Okla,
The people who drafted the turn over agreement most likely included language to deal with some kind of situation in the future. I'm sure we would be renting space as needed or as subs, ship, planes came into the PI. Just like airlines do now at airports.
Probably prices for things like servicing for these panes, etc. would be done at today's prices.
I'm sure the Pentagon has an ongoing set up for this and keeps it up do date by keeping in touch with their counterpart in the Philippines.

I am ordering Rosetta Stones Mandarin just in case. As far as Red China goes, I'd have to say that it looks good on a white table cloth.

Honestly, Okla, I haven't been following the China issue all that closely enough to venture a public opinion. However, as regards their aircraft carrier, I do know that it takes an awful lot of cumulative experience to run aircraft operations from a carrier, and China has none. Thus I would not expect that China could attain any naval aviation proficiency for a few years yet.
In the meantime, what's happening in the Middle East is far more serious, and it remains to be seen what the U.S. can do to redress the progressive weakening of its abilities and posture which has occurred during the last four years.
I do fear that we are living in interesting times, though I hope that Pax Americana remains something we can all enjoy.

Hey EXO....Completely agree on your point i.e., Naval experience. I seriously doubt that there are too many fledgling "Bull" Halseys berthed in Shanghai these days, but I am sure that the Chinese will get their "jollies" strutting around the South China sea with their new flattop. It poses no real danger, methinks. Only a "showing of the flag" kinda thing, but "Gunboat" diplomacy can get tricky and maybe dangerous. Cheers.

Hey Patty...I was wondering if Chad may have seen the photo of China's new CV. I have no way of posting it on my obsolete computer setup, but can describe it. Since he is an old "sea dog" with Naval Aviation running out his pores, I am sure he will know what I am attempting to describe. This vessel, as I said, formerly Russian, has the oddest feature on the very forward edge of the flight deck. It actually appears to "curl" upward. I would imagine this aids in getting A/C aloft. Is this the very newest in CV design or something the Russians have come up with in Postwar Naval ship design??? Maybe this "unique" aspect is one reason the Russians "dumped" this particular Carrier on their Chinese compatriots. Hopefully, you might have some dope on this type flight deck. Cheers.

Hi okla, you're correct that the Chinese carrier has a 'ski jump'. This was a British innovation to get Harriers off of a small deck with a better payload that if they were going purely vertical. You may recall from the Falklands war that the British carriers Hermes and Invincible had them.
The Chinese carrier isn't a true power projection aircraft carrier like ours, but more of a helicopter carrier with the capability to launch small numbers of Harrier-like short-takeoff-and-landing jets. To my knowledge, the Chinese do not currently possess a jet that could be used from it, but this will undoubtedly inspire them to develop one soon.
Other than being a new tool for intimidating countries like the Fils, I would say the real danger with this ship is that it will allow the Chinese to develop experience with naval aviation, perhaps giving them the confidence to start building true aircraft carriers down the road.
China's recent aggressive territorial claims combined with America's current 'leadership' and looming defense cutbacks makes me real worried. If China decides tomorrow to just take the Spratlys- who's going to stop them?

Hey rlbj....Thanks you so much for the update. I knew that I had seen these strange looking flight decks somewhere and I suppose it was during the Falkland War. I could never imagine our "Big E",etc with such a "creepy" appearance. I suppose it serves/served a purpose, but sleek, graceful lines it ain't. Thanks again. Like you, I wonder just what the Chinese have in mind with that warship appearing in the South China sea and adjacent areas. I can visualize a future need to "beef" up Clark and Subic if the Filipinos would want a heftier US presence. I guess time will tell. Cheers.

Nice , Hi Bob where you in the Armed Services before? Anyway.. This is actually Disturbing news for me. I don't want to Jump to any conclusions here but China VS RP war will be a no contest. We do not have the hardware the training and the budget to even offer resistance long enough for our Allies to arrive. I just hope that with all these, That this Nation find a sense of Unity.
