Was wondering if anyone would be inclined to send me a piece of the Rock, any rock will do so long as it came from Corregidor. I would be thrilled to have a chunk of the Rock in my possession. I would pay postage via paypal, and/or send a rock from Gettysburg in return, of which I have quite a few.

Hey Xray.....I would think a "bloodstone" from Corregidor would fill the bill. I am fortunate enough to have a stone from Gettysburgh. I picked up a 50 cent size piece down the slope from the "Copse of Trees" located on Cemetery Ridge. I walked a portion of Picketts Charge way back in 1970 during a blistering July afternoon. I don't see how Pickett's guys did it, especially while being cut down by "Grape" and musket balls. All I had to contend with was the heat. Cheers.

A small rock and a small piece of shrapnel from Corregidor would be nice! I didn't think about getting a rock while at Gettysburg last year. Maybe because I got a mini-ball from one of the souvenir shops. It may not even be from Gettysburg. I didn't get to go this year for the 150th anniversary because... well we were in the Philippines and stomping around Bataan. Here are some rocks from that area Okla. I don't think they'd let me walk away with one though haha.

Hey Vic....That's a great shot of the Pickett Charge area. My Brother in Law let me out down at the fence line and I trudged up to this rock wall while he, my wife and her sister drove on around to the Visitor Center. This was in the Summer of 1970. I understand that there is an entirely new vistor Center nowadays. I have always said that my top three battlefields to visit would be Corregidor, Gettysburg, and the Little Bighorn/Custer site. Fortunately, I have been to G'burg and the Custer Battlefield. Bataan/Corregidor, I guess are not to be. I think I have mentioned, previously, my attempt to extend my Far East (Korea) tour of duty by volunteering for a stint at Clark Field back in 1953, but that fell thru. I guess I will settle for two out of three. Thanks for posting this view of Pickett's Charge terrain. I still don't see how those guys could face up to advancing up that slope, in that heat, with the Yankees pouring Grapeshot and round after round of small arms ordnance at them. What men they made in those days. Cheers. Postscript...I, fortunately, found a minie ball at Shiloh, right after a heavy rainstorm. I should have turned it in, but it is sitting on a bookshelf, right behind me as I peck on my PC keyboard. My Grandmother's oldest brother fought at Shiloh and also marched thru Georgia to the Sea with Sherman. In fact, all my Civil War fore bearers wore the Yankee Blue.

Your post set off a spark. I thought I would contribute my two cents.
Before spending a lot of my free time researching the 503d, my primary passion was the Civil War. One of my Great Grandfather’s served in 15 OVI. He was shot in the hip at Liberty Cap, TN, in 1963. He died several months later in a hospital. He was buried at the hospital cemetery, but was later re-interred at Stones River National Cemetery in Murfreesboro, TN. During the re-interment, his identity was lost and he now rests in the unknown section.
I’ve been to many Civil War battlefields. Gettysburg is my favorite. In fact, I was there last year and purchase a commemorative bottle of wine, bottled for the 150th anniversary of the Battle of Gettysburg. My plan was to enjoy on July 1, 2 or 3 of this year with a fine cigar. I was so pre-occupied with the 503d; I forget I had it until I remembered it on July 5. I decided to save it for 151st anniversary. I’ll mark it on my calendar.
Something legal from Rock, that would be nice. I told my wife I would like to go there sometime. She told me I would be going by myself, but she didn’t say no. It’s not her cup of tea. She walked the fields of Gettysburg with me once, over fences and through the tall grasses that was enough.

Message sent army, thanks. Gettysburg is a great battlefield to explore, I have been there 4 times and hope to go back. Have also been to bulls run, Antietam and Chickamauga, the scene of a highly confusing and bloody battle, one of the Rebs last major victories. Pickett sure didn't want to charge, Longstreet advised the usually canny Lee not to, but it was ordered with drastic results for the Rebs. The lay of the land is pretty much unchanged, highly exposed position to launch a frontal assault especially considering they were flanked with cannon pretty near completely. Lee was counting on massed Confederate artillery smashing and keeping in check these flanking batteries, but they did no such thing and the rest is history. First time I went there I was in my teens and I read up on the battle before I went so I was familiar with names like Little Round top & Devils Den ... I was walking around actually expecting to find belt buckles laying on the ground, I'm guessing that area was picked clean within days of the battle, anything else is buried and inaccessible. Very sobering to walk through the cemetery, where often 100's of men are buried with only their units or sometimes even just states to identify them. Very few except ranking officers have solitary named plots, most were just heaped in, as I suppose is necessary given the circumstances.

I'm thrilled, hope to meet you guys on the Rock in the near future. I was seriously planning on going this year but I blew a wad on a solar telescope and motorcycle, before I knew it I was broke.
