I thought this needed its own thread.
I just today came across a full news reel about the Japanese surrender aboard the USS Missouri. I know, I know, we have all seen the 20 to 30 second film clips of General MacArthur saying "you will now sign at the places indicated" and "These proceedings are closed". But this is a full news reel of the event unedited (or less edited I should say) with footage that, unless you were Okla as a 16 year old lad catching news reels at the Saturday afternoon matinees, you probably have never seen this.
It goes into great detail and even shows the Generals arrival from the destroyer USS Buchanan and being greeted upon arrival by Nimitz and Halsey. We have all seen the Japanese representative Shigamitsu limping to the table, but I did not know he actually had that leg shot off by a Korean and is using an artificial limb.
They even give the exact time and date of the surrender by Shigamitsu, 09/02/45, 9:05 AM.
It also mentions that the surrender instrument is on rare parchment that was recovered from a basement in, of all places, MANILA. I did not know this and I am sure will be of interest to all on this site.
It also shows Mac signing and then fittingly giving the first 2 pens used to Wainwright and Percival, both of whom suffered through their own surrenders.
It also shows Nimitz and Halsey and Sherman signing as well as representatives from China, British Navy, Soviets, Blamey for Australia, Canada France and New Zealand. Hell even the Dutch were there and signed as well.
And even if you have seen this before, WATCH IT AGAIN! There is historical detail here that we all long for, and this moment needs to be preserved and passed around.
Enjoy!
