In 1978 I took a few days to go over to Corregidor, unknowingly giving myself a lifetime addiction to the island. Those were the days of the Sarkies Tours, which was a hit and miss sort of operation, when you could go down to the "boat" and find that it had wouldn't be running that day. In those day, it was an SN5 hovercraft and they weren't the most reliable of vehicles. They were also the days of Patsy's guesthouse, though I couldn't afford that, so stayed in the youth hostel. I am sure that I took a whole lot more images than this, so maybe there will be more, that is, if I can find them. So lets call these eighteen the first of an "occasional" series.

These photos are fantastic! I only wish that I could have been to Corregidor when you could still find all sorts of things lying on the ground.

I also rode that hovercraft in the 70's, 79 I believe. It was like riding a bucking bronco then, water a little rough. The craft broke down and we had to sit in the guest house for hours waiting for it to be repaired.
I shared the ride with a former Japanese commander of Corregidor, at least that's what one of the English speaking Japanese tourists said, he was one of his men from the war years, he stated. The Former Commander sat stone faced and ramrod straight in his chair as we waited for the repair to be completed. you had to stay with the tour nack then and you didn't get off the transport very often, to many unexploded shells and bombs just in the trees,( Ipil Ipil? seeded on the island by plane), and weeds off the roads they said.
That's also when I caught the bug. I was disappointed with this years trip to Corregidor, many places and roads uncut or covered in Kudzu vines.

I could see a difference between my trip in 2012 and the trip in 2014. It looked like a lot less maintenance being done

I didn't get to the island until '87, but by then I think the tours were a little better. I also didn't have the pleasure of taking the boat over. When Al McGrew and I got there that year (I believe it was about 1130pm on a Wed.), by the next morning (Thur.) we could not confirm whether the boat would go over on Sat., or not. So Al, Mike Nargatan (Sarkies head guy on the island) and I rented a car (driver and co-driver) and drove to Cabcaban on Bataan where we met up with the daily banca taking food to the Patsy Altomonte at the original Corregidor Inn. For my first time on the island, arriving by banca was a great experience.

Hey Registrar Great archive worthy photos here. Do you have any info on the make of the twin AA mount that I see you playing with? And also, could that be the same gun that now resides as a mere shell of its' former self on topside at the parade ground? It appears to be the same model although many parts seem to be missing (scavengers, perhaps?). I have often wondered about this weapons designation and where you would find it, i.e. battery defense, PT boat, etc. I would add my picture of it here but alas, can't seem to get it to work. Some help with it would be appreciated if you are not familiar with the relic to which I am referring. I would love to have that minor mystery solved. Thanks much.
