CORREGIDOR 1962 IMAGES About 40 images were given to me by Karl Schmidt, a Coastal Defense Study Group (CDSG) member and a past leader of that organization. He encouraged me to share them. These pictures, I’m sure, came from the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) thru the effort of Karl or fellow CDSG members. As a retired US Navy man I am happy to state that these images were shot by the Navy Photographer First Class Petty Officer (PH1) Robinson. They were all shot on the 25th and 30th May 1962. On a personal note, I first stepped ashore in the Philippines in 1962 and liked this country ever since. A that time I was a Third Class Petty Officer (BM3) and was on my first Western Pacific (WESTPAC) cruise. The first 7 images have been uploaded into this album, the size of the pictures rages about from 160KB to 1040KB: s74.photobucket.com/user/PI-Sailor/library/Corregidor%20by%20subject/Historical%20Corregidor/Corregidor%201962%20Images?sort=9&page=1or tinyurl.com/mbhhau3Here are the same 7 images but much smaller: X426. 1962-05-25 Navy image of the Headquarter of the former Fort Mills and Manila Bay Harbor Defense Command. X427. 1962-05-25 Navy image of the Headquarter of the former Fort Mills and Manila Bay Harbor Defense Command. X428. Kindley Airstrip on the former Fort Mills part of the Manila Bay and Subic Bay Harbor Defense Command. Picture was shot 1962-05-30 by Navy PH1 Robinson and was received thru the CDSG. X429. The lighthouse and area on Corregidor Island 1962. Picture was shot 1962-05-30 by Navy PH1 Robinson and was received thru the CDSG. X430. All these images in this album had in back of the picture this description, a noun name and that it was shot by Navy PH1 Robinson and all of the images were shot either on the 25th or the 30th of May 1962. X431. The lighthouse and area on Corregidor Island 1962. Picture was shot 1962-05-25 by Navy PH1 Robinson and was received thru the CDSG. X432. Some of the water tanks at the lighthouse area on Corregidor Island 1962. Malinta Hill and the Corregidor Island tail end is the back ground. Picture is by Navy PH1 Robinson and was received thru the CDSG.

Great photos, Karl. I really enjoy looking at these. By any chance did Mr. Schmidt have some photos of the Denver Hill-water tank area? Thanks, Chad

Those 1962 images are great, Karl, I am sure everyone is keenly awaiting the rest of them.
I was particularly interested in the size of the buildings adjacent to the lighthouse. They have grown through the years. They were used as aid stations and platoon HQ's in Feb. 1945.

Fascinating and revealing photos. Most of the sites were not cleared or restored by this time as the photos show. Kindley Field appears to be pretty much as it was in 1945 and even the foliage around it looks sparse. Obviously not so on Middleside and Topside. I am surprised at how big and dense the trees and foliage became after only 17 years. They have practically obliterated some structures. Does anyone know when they cleared these areas?

Excellent pictures, Karl. To echo what everyone else has said, looking forward to the rest. These serve for me as a useful "midpoint" between the pictures taken in the 1930s and 1940s and the pictures I took on my trip.

Great shots Karl.
When I visited Corregidor in 1979 by Hydrofoil it still looked pretty much like the photo's you have here Karl. We were restricted to the roads and the sites they took us to, including the small rest house where today's Hotel now sits. The grass was cut on the Parade grounds but the Mile Long Barracks were covered in trees as were all the other buildings. No museum.
I took some photo's then but they are in the form of slides, forgot I had them until seeing these...... Stored in a round slide projector cassette gizmo somewhere in my office file cabinet? on a shelf long undisturbed, I guess. We were told at that time not to venture anywhere into the trees, Ipil Ipil trees, seeded by air after the war, as there was much unexploded ordinance to step on and get blown up by.
